The 12 Best Aquariums in the USA - 2018

Did anyone else notice that most of the pictures did not come from the aquarium the website said they did?

While I can’t argue too much with the listed aquariums, the incorrect images used to illustrate the article is yet another glaring example of extremely sloppy “journalism.” Sigh.
Terrible article. I do not know what a " mantaray" is. Also, Shedd Aquarium is not that good in the fish sector, and the National Aquarium is super crowded. The Ripley Aquarium does not have whale sharks, although it would make sense for Ripley's to get them.

I have only been to a few aquariums (and only two on the list - Pacific and Florida). However it seems like a pretty good list to me. As my friend @snowleopard points out, it appears to be more accurate than most "best zoo" lists.

I am very much looking forward to my first visit to Monterey Bay Aquarium this summer.

The article misnamed the Aquarium of the Americas as “Audubon Aquarium of America”.

Not a bad list, I have been to most of the facilities on the list over the years and can agree. The Tennessee Aquarium is one that I have not made it to but is one I really want to see.

Please elaborate on how Shedd is not great in the fish sector. I was completely overwhelmed by their abundance of rarities and uncommon fish when I went, if anything I would have put them higher on that list, but I'd say the list is fair in it's rankings.

A terrible shark and ray collection. Newport is many times better, so is the Virginia Aquarium.

I'm going to have to tell you you are flat out wrong. Shedd does not have a "terrible" shark and ray collection, with 24 species ranging from rarities such as porcupine river ray (which I have never heard of being anywhere else), to white spotted guitarfish, to green sawfish. They may not have whale sharks, hammerheads, or manta rays, but saying their collection is "terrible" is simply false.

Even more importantly, sharks and rays should by no means define a fish collection, there are so many more species of fish than there are sharks and rays. Shedd is again, filled to the brim, with rarities such as clouded archer fish, cross river puffer, and violet line piranha. Their collection is large and diverse, ranging from extensive freshwater fish to extensive saltwater fish, something I don't see too often in other aquariums which tend to prioritize one over another, which proves your "not good in the fish sector" statement completely false.

You may subjectively not like Shedd, that's completely your opinion, but don't objectively criticize them with objective statements which are just false.

Also, Shedd Aquarium is not that good in the fish sector

What the heck are you talking about? Shedd Aquarium has more fish species than just about any facility in the world! According to the International Zoo Yearbook of 2014, Shedd Aquarium at that time had 1,433 species. That was topped by Zoo Berlin's 1,504 species, making Shedd the #2 zoological facility on the planet in terms of species in its collection. Reading your ridiculous comment "not that good in the fish sector" brought a smile to my face.

As of last year, Berlin was on 1,380 and Shedd was still listed as 1,433, so it's actually higher now. Shedd's 1,026 fish species is over five times the size of Virginia's "many times better" collection of 190.
