List of land and freshwater invertebrates kept in collections

This is the list of land and freshwater invertebrates kept in zoos and as pets.

The list focuses on big and visually attractive forms. Not included are ones raised for research. Enormous number of invertebrates were raised in laboratories, including small and weird groups, like parasites.

The list does not cover all: scorpions, bird spiders, cockroaches, mantises, phasmids, flower beetles and butterflies. These groups have too many species to list. If somebody can link complete lists, it would be interesting. Full list of phasmids kept as pets in Britain (and I strongly suspect it is near identical to the list kept worldwide) is: PSG Culture List - Phasmid Study Group

Listed are: English name, scientific name and a source of information. English names of inverts are a mess and many alternatives exist. It seems that about anybody makes one which he likes. I made up many descriptive names for flower beetles. I encourage everybody who writes about less known inverts to include scientific names. I include only one source, although many can exist.

Thanks for making this - a very interesting list for those that love invertebrates! Here are a few other interesting species that I have heard of being kept:

Snails and slugs:
Leopard slug Limax maximus - The Deep

Centipedes and millipedes:
Indian giant tiger centipede Scolopendra hardwickei - The Deep, 2017

Spiders:
Brazilian wandering spider Phoneutria sp. - Bristol Zoo, 2018 Deadly spider found in Asda bananas after flying 5,000 miles from Brazil | Metro News
David Bowie spider Heteropoda davidbowie - The Deep, 2017 (was successfully bred)

This is a very brave thread! It seems very focused on European zoos, but I like the idea a lot. You should attempt to make full lists for the spiders, scorpions, etc.

In my experience, the insects most commonly seen in zoos are mealworms, crickets and locusts: and I dare say that more cash and staff time are spent on these species than any others :), although in sheer numbers all the individuals of the various species and mutants of Drosophila (fruitflies) might win.
I would also suggest that the most common invertebrate that is not seen is the Malayan livebearing snail, Melanoides tuberculatus. They spend the day in the gravel at the bottom of freshwater aquaria and emerge in swarms at night, because these snails are often introduced accidentally with aquarium plants and they reproduce much faster than the proverbial rabbits. Very few fishes have strong enough jaws to eat them, although molluscivores such as puffers can and I have both seen and heard the cichlid Astatoreochromis alluaudi crunching their shells.

It seems very focused on European zoos, but I like the idea a lot.

Zoos in America and Asia don't usually put their species inventory online. This is why shared species appear mostly under Europe. Japanese also keep fighting beetles and should have lots of species, but I could hardly find names. I also avoided putting insects which are simply wild caught and not bred in collections, with some exceptions. Small animal attractions in the tropics have many of these.

If one can put species list for Asian live insect or butterfly parks it would be interesting, indeed.

land and freshwater invertebrates kept in zoos and as pets.
Common eastern mud snail - Nassarius vibex - Chester zoo online inventory 2016
Fighting conch - Strombus - Chester zoo online inventory 2016
Halloween hermit crab - Ciliopagurus strigatus - Chester zoo online inventory 2016
Striped hermit crab - Clibanarius - Chester zoo online inventory 2016
Cleaner Shrimp - Lysmata amboinensis - Chester zoo online inventory 2016
Fiddler crabs - Uca sp. - many

All the mentioned species are marine.

You can check all the land and freshwatwer "invertebrates" kept at Japanese zoos here: 動物園と水族館 Unfortunately you must seach for a term for every species (Japanese or scientific name), there is not a visible inventory of whole. You must tick the symbol of the butterfly and search.

I copy and paste here the list of land and freshwater "invertebrates" that I've seen in captivity ever, selecting from my published list of all animals seen in captivity.

If you combine your list, my list, and the species kept at Japan, you woill obtain a much more close to complete list.

Anybody knows if London (or any other zoo) still keeps Megaloprepus caerulatus alive?!?!?!:eek::eek: Where it was housed? How was the enclosure? It was shared with other insects?

P. S. Many of the species of your wishlist are too hard to keep in normal zoos. Forget about dragonflies. True bugs, planthoppers and many of the beetles are specialized feeders, many of them with unknown host plant, others such as the giraffe beetle have a host plant too difficult to obtain. Ground beetles are the easier to keep, but take in account that they are nocturnal and will pass the whole day hidden under a lodge or stone and visitors will not see it.

Great list. It is perhaps better described as a very good sample (even if combing the lists provided in thus thread) rather than an attempt of being near-complete. For a few of these group I formerly maintained a list to genus level only, but even at that level it ended being too a bit too much (just look at the taxonomic mess in Geosesarma; one of the most often kept is the recently described G. dennerle and this is one of several species sometimes called "vampire crab"; red devil vampire crab is most often but not always G. hagen). E.g., if looking at crustaceans, a good sample of the freshwater and land crab species seen in captivity can be seen on this (German) page, which however also has some marine species:

PANZERWELTEN …from crab science to crab keeping…
However, it is not entirely complete either; missing are e.g. Madagapotamon (see the recent Madagascar thread) and Discoplax where several species appear in captivity, including D. celeste (considered part of D. hirtipes until 2012) in the zoochat gallery. Among other crustacean group, the list of freshwater shrimp kept is huge and I won't even attempt making a list. In crayfish, the two European and a few North American genera are regularly kept, as well as the New Guinean Cherax. Astacoides are rarely kept (see the recent Madagascar thread). Some endemic Australian (Parastacidae) and the single New Zealand genus are kept in public aquariums locally, but I have never seen them elsewhere. Most land hermit crab species (Coenobitidae) are kept. There is only a single true freshwater hermit crab, endemic to Vanuatu, and I doubt it ever has been kept in captivity. The Halloween hermit crab, listed in the first post, is a marine species (as is Lysmata amboinensis). However, several hermit crabs do fine in brackish water, including the frequently blue-legged hermit crab. A few Aegla species, an unusual South American group of crustaceans, are uncommon but still regular in captivity.

Indonesian Land Crab - Gercarcinus ruricola

I suspect there was a mix-up here, as this is species from the Caribbean/West Atlantic region. It occasionally shows up in captivity, but its beautiful relative G. quadratus is one of the most frequently seen land crabs seen in captivity. The oceanic island "Gecarsinus", like planata, are very rare in captivity and now placed in Johngarthia.

Similar notes could be provided for the other groups listed, e.g. this page has many of the Orthoptera that are kept: Informationen, Artnamen A-Z
However, this list is not complete either, missing Amblycorypha (notably the remakable bright pink morph of A. oblongifolia, which unfortunately only seem to be kept in North America), Arachnacris (often listed by the synonym Macrolyristes in zoos), wetas, etc, etc.

Blue weevil - ? - bugmuseum.com/blue-weevil.html

I have never heard of anyone keeping Eupholus, but they are often included in dead insect displays and I strongly suspect that's what we're looking at here (despite the "live" subsection). In fact, the only weevils I've heard of being kept in captivity are the large Rhynchophorus and they are notorious pests of palms, meaning that international transports often are likely to be restricted. In general, any insect group that feeds exclusively on plants where most species are either specialists (potentially making it hard to find food in captivity) or pests (potential import restrictions) are rare in captivity. Among these are true bugs (only some of the predatory aquatic species are frequent), longhorn beetles, etc. These groups are not entirely absent, but rare.

On a worldwide basis, Germany is overall quite a bit ahead of all other countries when it comes to diversity of land/freshwater inverts kept, but many of these are only among private keepers. However, there are also lots of cases with species only kept in one continent. These are often native to the continent where kept, but not always.

Tama zoo in Japan (that have the biggest (and most diverse?) insectarium of any zoo in the world) keeps captive Sipalinus gigas, Mesalcidodes trifidus and Pachyrrhynchus infernalis.
I forgot to mention within the species kept by myself in a terrarium, a Sphenophorus meridionalis.

Eupholus weevils should not be too hard to get for display alive for an interested zoo. They are legal to export (a lot of individuals are exported dead for collectors), and they feed on yam leaves, a plant that is relatively easy to get for western zoos.

You can check all the land and freshwatwer "invertebrates" kept at Japanese zoos here: 動物園と水族館 Unfortunately you must seach for a term for every species (Japanese or scientific name), there is not a visible inventory of whole. You must tick the symbol of the butterfly and search.

I must try a scientific name of every insect on Earth? This might take a while...

I tried to hack it and put 'pa'. Then what came out was among others, Anas pantherope (lesser emperor dragonfly) linked to Ikko Marine Park 京急油壺マリンパーク

I really feel a Zoochatter who knows Japanese should help there... :(

Another easier way is to search the animal list for each Japanese zoo/aquarium (But there are a loooot, and most of them without invertebrates), and then select the terrestrial/freshwater invertebrates of each one. Take care with names! Anas are ducks, and "pantherope" would mean "leopardpe". The name of the dragonfly is Anax parthenope (Parthenope was one of the sirens of Greek mythology, coming from parthenos meaning virgin).

In theory, but they'd have to establish all the contacts, which often involves several middlemen. There are quite a number of dead insects being exported from New Guinea, but as far as I know zero live. Indeed, I have often wished that butterfly halls would get some of the New Guinea/Solomon/Moluccan Ornithoptera birdwing butterflies, some farmed in fairly large quantities locally, then pinned and exported dead (if you can get CITES papers for dead, you should be able to do it for live). The Australian members of the O. priamus complex (euphorion) that infrequently turn up outside their native country in European and North American butterfly halls are nice, but they don't fully match the ones from New Guinea/Solomons/Moluccas.

None on my visit; may definitely have had them on other times. Regardless, I do supect that they do have the most diverse insectarium, but I'll admit that I found the educational value and signs rather lacking (I visited with a local, i.e. had "my own" translator for the Japanese parts). In this Cincinnati's insectarium is in top. Japan is a rather odd country in terms of inverts. Although overall in the top in terms of diversity, they are still behind Germany except in some very specific invert groups, like stag beetles and jellyfish. Why certain groups have such a large following in Japan I do not know, but there might be a cultural explanation.

Long gone from London. Sadly.

Two that I meant to mention in eaelier post but forgot. Worth highlighting because they belong to otherwise essentially unkept groups:

*Giant Indian red velvet mite, Trombidium grandissimum - rarely turns up among private keepers.
*Baikal giant amphipod, Acanthogammarus/Brachyuropus reicherti - as far as I know, only in the local Baikal aquarium, but I have limited knowledge of Russian aquariums and it might also be elsewhere in the country. Except for the seal that has been kept at several aquariums, the only Baikal exhibit I know elsewhere was at Lake Biwa museum's aquarium (both among the oldest lakes) and they did not have Baikal inverts on my visit.

Lake Biwa museum's aquarium

...oops, should have said reicherti and victorii. Further, I've just located info that shows that LBM's aquarium have had them since summer 2016 (my visit was a bit too early, evidently), with victorii still present in 2018.

Now if an aquarium only would [could] display pelagic Comephorus sculpins. Sure the members of Cottocomephoridae are nice and displayed a few places (Russia, Japan), but Comephorus is the fish of Lake Baikal.

Back on subject... invertebrates.

Sponges:
freshwater sponge - Spongilla lacustris - Occassionally transplanted into aquarium from the wild. Sensitive but can be kept.

On my visit in 2017, it was interesting to see a huge Spongilla lacustris sponges, covering a few m2 of the bottom in a "tank" at Aqua Silkeborg. However, it is in an open-topped "tank" that is subjected to the natural weather and, I think, receives water from a nearby lake system (the "tank" only contains local species). I've seen this sponge at several other aquariums, also apparently thriving individuals, but never giants like Aqua's.

Anyway, going back to Lake Baikal: At Baikal's aquarium, the endemic Lubomirskia baicalensis and Baikalospongia are both kept. Both among the largest freshwater sponges in the world but only small ones at the aquarium. I've often thought that an aquarium with a Lubomirskia "forest", a unique habitat in this lake, would be remarkable. The very slow growth of the Baikal sponges may limit that idea to replicas.

Curently not, according to their last report. Yours truly saw it years ago. It was in a large terrarium, one of a row in the old insect house. It was decorated with brormeliads and tropical plants, much like a poison frog terarium (by the wayy, larvae of this damselfly are competitors of poison frog larvae in bromeliads. They did not have much room to fly really. It was only this species. I think there might have been 3 specimens, but my memory may be playing tricks.

I have found another 155 species of either terrestrial or freshwater invertebrate kept in public collections that have not been mentioned on this thread (apologies if any on the list already have). Almost all the species, together with their Latin names and collection of origin, came from the website below:

https://www.joelsartore.com/photo-ark/

P.S. I think that the New Orleans Insectarium and Audubon Insectarium might be one and the same place, but I have included the different names for the photos they were listed on, just in case.
