Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari in Gentry, Arkansas has some. Ken's Exotics had a couple for sale a while back too.

I'd just looked at your profile and I was wondering if your thinking of obtaining some for setting up a private zoo of your own.

Not at all. why does my profile indicate that? I was just curious if any private ranchs had some i think i large preserve 1000 acre plus with lakes and wetlands would be a good place for hippos. Any ungulates florish with space that most zoos cannot provide. although they do have a gaggle of keepers shoving target sticks in there face is does replace large expanses of space and natural settings.

Sorry for making such a quick assumption. Your profile said that you worked with hoofstock and pachyderms for 17 years, and I assumed from this information and your overall curiousity of hippos in private collections that you might want to have some for yourself, and eventually set up a zoo of your own.

Once again I'm sorry for the assumption. Regardless of the latter sentence, I hope my post was helpful still.

I think an important fact from that document is only 55% is from known pedigree. That means 45% of the population is considered unsafe to breed because they are not sure how they genetically fit in to the picture. It does ask for zoos to explore the origin of its hippos if that is unknown but that might be easier said than done. Age isn't the biggest issue for the population. Becoming inbred is over time.
