Official announcement to come on Tuesday morning - however I can exclusively reveal to Zoochat members that Whipsnade will receive two young Polar Bears from a Canadian zoo in Spring 2019. The enclosure for them will be on the site of the former Onager paddock. It will be based on the one at Yorkshire but a much smaller version. The keeper I spoke too (George Loofah I think he was called) said that he hoped they would be on exhibit by this time next year.

I think I met George’s cousin once-Lirpa Loof.

Anyway, that paddock would be far too small for Polar bears. Maybe Ursus Marmaladus though!

which is the former onager paddock?
I wonder how small "much smaller" means.

edit: okay, I remember where it is now. that isn't that too bad a size really, is it?

Good one!

Great news! It is good to see a resurgence in polar bears in the UK!

Also, remember the 'one species to improve a collection' threads? Maybe they are listening to us :P

Talking about a resurgence of bears, have you heard about the new Wirral Zoo opening up that’s only going to have one exhibit and one species? It’s going to be a sun bear only zoo, apparently, with 1:1 from the Free the Bears sanctuary in Cambodia to form a breeding pair.

Oh wait, that was just a dream!

Well, I hope my '''''prediction''''' is correct.

Wouldn’t it be nice if it were true! However, with the current ZSL hierarchy the way it is, you’ve got a better chance of resurrecting the dodo!

Having said that, if they want to charge extortionately high prices in their restaurants, maybe the money can be put towards a high quality exhibit for Polars.

Whipsnade only charges £1.30 more than Edinburgh Zoo does for a cheeseburger, chips and a drink (£14.35 versus £13.05) which I think is to be expected in the South England. I don’t really think that’s disproportionate at all.

There’s been a huge change lately; their main restaurant is no longer a choose it yourself buffet but a fullblown restaurant with waiters and all. Therefore, the prices have also sneakily increased.

These prices are from their updated Base Camp Restaurant menu dated March 2018, so this must be after the price increase. If food was a lot cheaper previously, then it must have been a bargain.
