Burgers' Zoo Burgers Zoo 2018

Right, a couple of questions in preparation for my first visit of the year on Friday:

- are the chachalacas offshow due to the bird flu?
- is the bird house open?
- has anyone actually seen the blues duikers in with the bongos yet?

The bird house is open and I did not see the Chacalaca, but as all ducks and quails in the Bush and Desert are off-show, I assume the same applies to the Chacalaca.

- I believe so. I haven't seen them on my visit past week. Same with the ducks, partridges and the quails in the Desert.
- Yes
- No, the blue duikers are still in the old pygmy hippo enclosure.

Have an amazing time, I’m so jealous! I absolutely can’t wait to get the opportunity to go back! Say hello to my best mate Frodo for me!

Frodo?

I had easter brunch last monday in at the zoo. Amazing weather, very crowded and all the animals were active. However there were no animals active on the main enclosure in the Rimba.
Plenty of young zebras around. And I read in the Burgers Zoo newspaper that they're bringing back the Epaullete Sharks to the lagune. Right now the zoo is holding two youngers with the lionfish. They hope to breed with them once they've grown.

Frodo is the (sterile) male sun bear. He will be leaving soon to go to Munster. I believe the plan is to bring in a male from Edinburgh to replace him, and then in turn a female from Usti will go to Edinburgh to join the remaining male there.

So where are the guitarfish that were in the lagune?

2 weeks ago they were separated in the shallow part right after the entrance.

Awesome! Glad to hear that they're working towards SunbearBabies>
Did anyone here hear anything on the two water monitors in the rimba, on when they're allowed to interact together? They've been seperated by glass for a while now, so I am curious on that.

Notes from Burgers’ today:

- Three seals; Arctic, Baltic and hybrid young (no longer a fluffy one)
- Both blue duikers still in their paddock, not with the bongos yet
- Monitors still separated by glass
- A volunteer was saying the first ever migration of fiddler crabs was happening in the Mangrove; moving in same sex groups from one end of the mudflat to the other
- Saw all three manatees at the same time at the window for the first time ever; the oldest female is huge compared to the male and the other female
- No twinspots in the Bird House that I could see, nor lizards at the end by the apes
- All 26 apes outside today, as well as the mangabeys and their new baby
- No sign of the beisa oryx on the Savannah, everything else was there including the older rhino calf (younger rhino calf yet to venture out I’m told)
- Guitarfish still separated in the lagune
- Saw the epaulette shark in the lionfish tank (in the middle amongst the rocks)
- Still 7.2 sharks total in the main shark tank (4.1 blacktip reef, 1.0 blacktip, 1.0 hammerhead and 1.1 zebra sharks)
- Saw a pitiful 16/34 birds in Bush...still missing the catbirds (chacalacas I know are offshow and the leafbird is like a mythical beast in there)
- No skunks signed in the second ringtail enclosure; are they gone?

•Blue Duiker should've been visible in the old Pygmy Hippo enclosure as they were moved. They are often seen in the back from my last few visits.

•The Oryx sign should be bottom right I believe near their seperation enclosure.

•Naomi (Rhino young) will roam the savannah end of next week.

•Have to take a closer look at the fiddlercrabs! Love to see that migration happening, so will visit next week I guess. Isn't migration a sign of breeding about to happen?

•Skunks were removed from the enclosure near the bighornsheep. They should be in the other enclosure.

I did see the blue duikers :) was just saying they’re still where they usually are

The oryx were signed but weren’t visible is what I meant

The skunks were in the second ringtail enclosure (where the foxes used to be) on my last couple of visits last year, but yesterday they weren’t visible and there wasn’t a sign up for them either. So they might be gone

A third Beisa oryx just seems to have arrived, so probably that's why you missed them.
Last monday (april 2nd) All 3 Oryx were in the seperation enclosure on the left of the savannah. So Burger's is possibly giving them time to get used to eachother and after that release them onto the savannah

Todays visit I noticed a few things:
- the Scarlet Ibis are still kept behind the scenes (behind the mangrove)
- Only one fulvous whistling duck is in the Mangrove (left?)
- All birds were roaming the savannah (pelican, guineafowl, crowned crane
- The three Beisa Oryx are all still kept in the little sand enclosure.
- New trees/climbing structures in the sunbear enclosure (binturong is getting more space to roam?) However the trees are currently protected with electric wires.
- Lots of young animals on the rimba grassland
- and a 4rd Gibbon was in the aviary-like enclosure. Not sure if they had 2 females before the young came.

An update in Dutch on the Golden-bellied mangabeys in Burgers' Zoo so far:
Hoe gaat het nu met de goudbuikmangabeys?

They started with 4 animals in 2013-4, a male from Montpellier, a female from Budapest and two females from San Antonio. Unfortunately one of the San Antonio females died in 2015. In 2016 a young male arrived from Wuppertal. A first young was born in early 2017, but this was the first young for this mother, so she didn't really know what to do. As they did not want to hand rear the young, it died. The mother again became pregnant and in October 2017 the second young was born, for which the whole group takes good care.
