Taman Safari Bogor Bornean Bay Cat at Taman Safari Bogor

It'd be very interesting to know the origin of it.
What's the history of this species in captivity? zootierliste mentions one individual at Rome zoo, is this the only one outside of southeast Asia?

That Rome record might be dodgy. I remember it being discussed briefly on Zoochat before - I'll have to try and find it again - I think it's just based on a passing mention in the zoo records.

Found it: Iberian Lynx trip report

In fact the "discussion" was just @Arizona Docent mentioning it and me wondering if it really was a Bay Cat.

I have never heard of bay cats being kept in captivity except the ones caught and photographed fairly recently in Borneo. However according to the Rome Zoo records, a male bay cat was obtained on the 1st December 1934 and died on 18th January 1935. I do wonder if it was really a bay cat or just an Asian golden cat.

So that dubious record aside, this is the first specimen outside of Borneo? Now that is exciting!

Given the fact that at the time Bay Cat was regarded as a subspecies of Asian Golden Cat, I have long-suspected that the record in question may apply to a Asian Golden Cat which came into the collection from a shipment which left Indonesia from Borneo, but which was not necessarily captured *in* Borneo. In the intervening time someone has seen a record of a Golden Cat arriving from Borneo and jumped to a conclusion which may or may not be correct.

That photo was taken 20 days after my visit, and there's no reason to think it was the first day it was on show. The chance it was onsite when I was there is fairly high I think.
@devilfish, did you book your flight yet?

It's sort of like (but much worse) when I found out later that the Assam Zoo almost certainly had a melanistic Golden Cat right when I was there, but it wasn't on show that I saw.

Given all the very nice species the pair of you have seen, you can't really complain too much :p

I think this is (clearly) an error in the data, but the CITES Trade Database has two live Catopuma badia being exported from Malaysia to Canada for breeding in 2000.

And I found the other thread on Zoochat where I was talking about the Rome Bay Cat:
Very Exotic Shape/Size/Colour of Tropical Animal, Present Yours?

regarding the Bay Cat, the original source simply says "In some cases important specimens were not preserved at all, such as the male Bornean bay cat, Catopuma badia, which was received from Beherend on 1st December 1934 and died on 18 January 1935, according to the zoo's records." (The italian zoological gardens and their role in mammal systematic studies, conservation biology and museum collections (PDF Download Available))

So basically it is an animal which lived less than two months and was not preserved. It could have been a Bay Cat or it could have been a misidentified Asiatic Golden Cat. There's no way to know one way or the other.

A bay cat on display at Taman Safari? I only have one thing to say about that.

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
