I really like making spreadsheets, especially animal related ones. So over the last couple of weeks, I've put together one of all animals held by AZA zoos / aquariums / etc, based on their websites.
A few notes:
-It's broken down into a couple of sections (the tabs are at the bottom). The main spreadsheet is general zoos in the USA. The second tab is Aquariums and other institutions that are more specialized, like reptileland and butterfly pavilion. Third is all foreign locations, including Canada. 4th is places that are certified but not accredited, which generally means they're not regularly open to the public. At the end I've included my list of break-down for even-toed ungulates... I had to break them down into a few columns somehow, and I did it by orders for the most part, but I made that page to help me remember which go where.
-I've done my best to get everything off of websites! I looked not just at species lists but exhibit and area descriptions, adopt-an-animal options, anything that could give me names of what each zoo has. There is a column near the beginning that mentions whether I think it is a complete list or not. Ones with a "yes" are websites with PDFs, etc that specifically say they contain every held animal. On a few occasions I used wikipedia, but those are mentioned.
-I'm mostly a mammal person, and zoos tend to put more emphasis on their mammals on websites, so I've broken them down into more columns that others. I've learned a lot about bird species as I've gone along, but doing water birds (waterfowl, waders, penguins, etc) and everything else was the best way for me to break it down without having to look up every other species.
-For the most part, I went with what a website called each species. That means there are species that go by multiple names within, especially anything non-mammal and primates (my mammal weakness). The two main exceptions would be I always use mountain lion and african wild dog.
-A generic listing, ex. butterflies, is usually in lower case. I didn't start doing that until about halfway through, and I've fixed ones I've noticed while proofreading it, but I'm sure I've missed some.
-I'm sure there's typos I missed, sorry! Usually dumb ones. Some that look like typos are from websites, ex hamerkop vs hammerkop. I usually corrected ones that I knew were wrong on websites, ex Bangal for Bengal.
-Shedd Aquarium isn't on here because the website doesn't work, and hasn't for months.
I'd love to expand on this with zoochatters info! To keep it manageable, if you'd like to contribute, please try to send me stuff broken down into the columns I have, or at least in alphabetical order by mammals/birds/reptiles/amphibians/fish/etc. It'll better allow me to keep it flowing and save me time. Feel free to post in here or PM me.
