Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion, Speculation & Questions 2018

Not to be pedantic, but I thought it was hyperthyroidism, a symptom of which is weight loss?

(The above is also treatable thankfully)

I thought they said hypothyroidism which would explain his lethargy and lack of hair. I'm not sure that either would account for his lack of growth (I have first-hand experience of an overactive thyroid).

In humans, untreated hypothyroidism can cause stunted growth, this could also be true in one our closest relatives.

With another one still to be publicly announced.....

That's just teasing!!!

Wonderful news though, am hoping to visit soon and this makes going even more appealing. I genuinely think this could be the year that Chester smash the 2 million barrier for visitor numbers!

for all we know the third birth announcement may be leaf-cutter ants :p
They’re like one born every minute! Anyone ever seen bee movie, it’s very much like the scene where they apply for jobs and they go on about death. Safe to say with the ants if they knew how many were born and if the zoo ever reported all births we would be drowning in a slue of news about ant births :p

What would be the ultimate birth for posters?

Binturong aside, for me it would be something dark and nocturnal from Madagascar.

Those in favour please say ...

Ooh that's a good call! I think I'd pick the Sun Bears as my first choice - Jaguar cubs would also be very nice.

Have the Mountain Chicken frogs bred yet? Not particularly one of my favourite species, but that would be good news for the species.

Absolutely the Sun Bears. It would be a UK first breeding and only the third successful litter in Europe since 2011 (both other births were single cubs to the same pair in the Czech Republic)

Not to put you fellas down but shouldn’t this be in the speculation thread, granted Rob also should also take note of this because of his rather tantalisingly cryptic post.:p

Yes, mountian chickens have bred at chester Zoo, despite what you heard on The Secret Life of the Zoo. First breeding was in 2009 with 20 born, 18 did not survive. I can't find my records for the next few years but I think they also bred in 2010 and 2011.

Ah I didn't know that, thanks for the info. I wonder why they stopped breeding? Presumably they haven't reproduced with the current team in charge of them, so I'm sure they would be keen to have them breeding again.
