Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion, Speculation & Questions 2018

When I visited on 11th May there was at least 4 piglets, hopefully all 4 are still there.

Interesting, whatever number there are I’m glad they’re building their group again.

I suspect they will never have a large group, the enclosure being not that large. More likely just parents and most recent young. I have seen large groups of RR at Colchester( but now reduced) and Howletts and they are quite spectacular, as Suidae (and many other species) always are in bigger groups.

There may have been 4 I only noticed 3 but then again I only stopped to look for a minute or so.
On closer inspection today there were 4 adult Red River hogs (I’m presuming Mum, Dad & 2 of last years litter) & 3 piglets.
Blast films were still positioned outside the Okapi enclosure.

Do Chester have a breeding male grévy’s zebra? I know Mac, the previous one went to Woburn. Any details on the herd would be great.

Now that all areas are open again does anyone have a complete list of birds currently present in the first walk through past the Bali Temple area please (this area had Javan green magpies in last year if I remember rightly)

Having seen a few posts in the reports thread mentioning new species of birds at the zoo, I hopped on over to get an overview of the current bird situation, and was surprised at just how many new entries there were
To provide a list of species that I believe to be relatively new:
  • Black-browed barbet (Psilopogon oorti)
  • Black-naped oriole (Oriolus chinensis)
  • Blue-naped mousebird (Urocolius macrourus)
  • Collared trogon (Trogon collaris)
  • Common waxbill (St. Helena waxbill) (Estrilda astrild)
  • Fire-tufted barbet (Psilopogon pyrolophus)
  • Lavender Waxbill (Estrilda caerulescens)
  • Orange-cheeked waxbill (Estrilda melpoda)
  • Passerini's tanager (Ramphocelus passerinii)
  • Red Avadavat (Amandava amandava)
  • Scaly-breasted bulbul (Pycnonotus squamatus)
  • Silver-eared mesia (Leiothrix argentauris)
  • South African firefinch (Lagonosticta rubricata rubricata)
  • Spotted laughingthrush (Garrulax ocellatus)
  • Sunda laughingthrush (Garrulax palliatus)
  • West African green-backed twinspot (Mandingoa nitidula schlegeli)
  • Yellow cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata)
  • Yellow-crowned bishop (Euplectes afer)
  • Zebra waxbill (Amandava subflava)
It seems there has been a large increase in African passerines. I do wonder, if they have just received a large batch from somewhere, or have they gone and sought these birds out, if all these entries are even legitimate. I only bring the former up, as I don't perceive any reason for the zoo to rush out and get these birds in so quickly, as they appear to have.

Do you have any locations as to were they are in the collection please as hoping now to visit this Saturday?

After looking at this list there are a few that would be lifers for me on this list.

I don't sorry, I was merely browsing zootierliste and noticed a fairly large amount of new birds and was checking to see if these were errors or not.

When will the calf be on show, or is it already?

Even if on show, don't expect to see it. Okapi calfs will sit in a "nest" for the first few months of life. Around 6 months old it usually will be following its mother about, by which point it is nearly as big as an adult.

If you want to see it, suggest camping outside the enclosure.
