Thanks, they are still working on the platypus exhibit. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place.
I love how it connects to Condor Ridge, Garden Trail, and Tiger Trail.

Walkabout Australia is on the parks map. It appears to be bigger than I expected.

The map is not to scale. I would say it's roughly the size of lion camp in real life.
I don't think the map is necessarily to scale, but yes it is a large area.
Not the kind of publicity that SD expected for the new exhibit. But it really was an inexcusable faux pas.

Wow. That's just all kinds of stupid. I like how the zoo first said Maori were "native to both countries", then changed to "we were misinformed", and then to "oh, actually that was just part of a global display of culture"...
Given how Kea are often placed in Australian exhibits, and the common mis-use of "Australasia" in exhibit names, I think it's fair to say that geography isn't a strong point in many zoos' managements.
Bloody typical and absolutely beyond me how SD Zoo staffers could end up making that kind of an inappropriate display and error of judgement.
I didn't see any signs for them.
I believe Freckled Duck was also listed on one of the signs too.
Yes, it was! I saw the Radjah duck in the Marsupial Walkway. There were no birds in the McClure Pond where the sign for Freckled Duck was. Hope to see them next time.
Honestly, it was embarrassing to me and many people I was with that day. This guy was also there on media day and he was amazing!

Currently at the Safari Park viewing the new Australian exhibit complex. I had concerns earlier in regards to its themeing and readiness about a month and a half before opening.
I was one hundred percent wrong after now seeing the final product. This complex is now my second favorite at the park behind Tiger Trail and a true joy to experience. It is excelent in theme and well layed out with numerous insightful innovations for viewing and presentation.
This is worth a visit if you can manage.

No pictures from me. I think Betsy are great and I swear I saw a full walk through video somewhere. Maybe Facebook? If you would like, I will take photos of some “smart” or “innovative” aspects I was referencing on my next visit. I would warn, my idea of innovative or smart are not about the animals or husbundry, nor are they groundbreaking or earth shatteringly cool, they are simple things San Diego Zoo has not been doing. One example: A large temporary stage has been erected in nairobi village. It is what it sounds like, but they actually used truss covers and the Stage was built by a more professional crew than things in the past or more money was allocated too the entertainment offering. Or a small lawn with fake sheep designed for animal presentations that represent an Austrailian pasture when not being used for meet and greets. The slope was terraced ever so slightly to clearly create a land scaped amphitheater style area for comfortable, level sitting on the grass. Good for strollers. This is going the extra mile in a way they have not in recent times and utlizes a themepark concept of performance space that doubles as a backdrop or themed area that does not look like an empty performance space when not in use.
New elephant calf(1.0) born at the park on Sunday, the first since 2012. His name is Umzula-Zuli his mother is Ndlulamitsi.
