Marsupials in the United States

Going back to marsupials, San Diego Zoo and Busch Gardens Tampa keep New Guinea Ground Cuscus, Phalanger gymnotis, and Wildlife World Zoo keeps both Swamp/Black/Black-Tailed/Fern Wallaby/Black Pademelon/Stinker/Black Stinker, Wallabia bicolor, and Agile/Sandy Wallaby, Notamacropus agilis.

EDIT: San Diego still keeps Goodfellow's/Buerger's/Shawmayer's/Ornate Tree-Kangaroo, Dendrolagus goodfellowi buergersi, behind the scenes.

EDIT (again): San Diego Zoo has Common Ringtail Possum, Pseudocheirus peregrinus peregrinus, behind the scenes.

I have a question about swamp and agile wallabies at Wildlife World Zoo. I know ZIMS lists both species in that collection, but I found ZIMS records for Worldlife World Zoo unreliable. For example they also list 5 four-eyed opossums (philander opossum) in the same collection, all of which were purchased in 2002... I highly doubt that any of these are still alive 16 years later, but ZIMS records for Wildlife World Zoo still list them (which to me means that the zoo is probably not very diligent in their ZIMS record keeping). This makes me wonder about both Wallaby species as well. The zoo website does not seem to mention either species, but they don't have a good list of species anyways. Has anyone been there recently to confirm that both species are still in collection?

By the way, last striped possum at Philadelphia died in 2015, so they are no longer kept there even behind the scenes. The only remaining specimen in North America, per ZIMS (there could be others in private hands or in non-ZIMS facilities), is 1 at Wildlife World Zoo (again!), acquired in 1996, but, as I expressed earlier, I don't know whether this record is trustworthy...

A quick google gives some "maximum longevity" records as between five and ten years. Even if it was somehow acquired as a newborn in 1996 it would now be 22 years old...

That’s my point:) I don’t think Wildlife World Zoo has trustworthy ZIMS records - thus my earlier inquiry regarding 2 wallaby species allegedly kept there and nowhere else in the US.

To the best of my knowledge, the following species are kept in US zoos:

Didelphimorphia
Bare-Tailed Woolly Opossum Caluromys philander
Yapok Chironectes minimus (maybe only privately, sometimes they pop up at DWA)
White-Eared Opossum Didelphis albiventris (maybe only privately)
Common Opossum Didelphis marsupialis (whatever the Mexican subspecies is; Smithsonian National Zoo)
Virginia Opossum Didelphis virginiana (various subspecies and probably subspecific hybrids)
Grey Four-Eyed Opossum Philander opossum (maybe only privately)
Brazilian Short-Tailed Opossum Monodelphis domestica

Dasyuromorphia
Tasmanian Devil Sarcophilus harrisii

Diprotodontia
Koala Phascolarctos cinereus (I think all subspecies adustus)
Common Wombat Vombatus ursinus (all hirsutus except for Albuquerque BioPark which has tasmaniensis)
Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombat Lasiorhinus latifrons
Sulawesi Bear Cuscus Ailurops ursinus (Memphis Zoo)
New Guinea Ground Cuscus Phalanger gymnotis (I think leucippus; San Diego Zoo and Busch Gardens Tampa)
Northern Common Cuscus Phalanger orientalis (only privately but I've seen them advertised for potential sale to zoological collections)
Ornate Cuscus Phalanger ornatus (only privately)
Common Ringtail Possum Pseudocheirus peregrinus (nominate subspecies; San Diego Zoo)
Striped Possum Dactylopsila trivirgata (I think, I know Philadelphia Zoo had them until the nocturnal wing closed a few years ago)
Sugar Glider Petaurus breviceps (nominate at San Diego Zoo Safari Park, don't know of any others listed to subspecies status)
Feathertail Glider Acrobates pygmaeus
Brush-Tailed Bettong Bettongia penicillata (ogilbyi)
Long-Nosed Potoroo Potorous tridactylus (Gladys Porter Zoo)
Matschie's Tree-Kangaroo Dendrolagus matschiei
Goodfellow's Tree-Kangaroo Dendrolagus goodfellowi (buergersi; San Diego Zoo)
Agile Wallaby Notamacropus agilis (Wildlife World Zoo)
Tammar Wallaby Notamacropus eugenii
Parma Wallaby Notamacropus parma
Red-Necked Wallaby Notamacropus rufogriseus
Common Wallaroo Osphranter robustus (I think nominate)
Red Kangaroo Osphranter rufus
Western Grey Kangaroo Macropus fuliginosus (all subspecies melanops subspecies except for Gladys Porter Zoo which has nominate)
Eastern Grey Kangaroo Macropus giganteus (nominate subspecies)
Yellow-Footed Rock-Wallaby Petrogale xanthopus (nominate subspecies)
Swamp Wallaby Wallabia bicolor

Happily I've seen all of these except the Phalanger ornatus & Phalanger orientalis- hence why I'm so keen on tracking these species down. Actually unconfirmed I've seen Phalanger ornatus at Batu Secret Zoo- that may need to be my next upload, so I can get some cuscus opinions.

Wow, that's impressive! Sorry I don't have information on the cuscuses for you. Hopefully somebody else does!

Ahh, well where did you see these photos at least haha?
A friend sent it to me. He doesn’t remember the website it’s from, nor do I. Exotic animal sites are your best bet but I’ve never seen cuscus on the one Thylo mentions.

The seller of the Northern Common Cuscus has placed an ad for those and other odd mammals on various occasions.

Thylo, one more question: which zoo in the US keeps bare-tailed woolly opossums (Caluromys philander)? I think I saw photos (I believe taken by Giant Eland) in one of the ZooChat galleries from some obscure collection in Florida, but that was several years ago and the species, like all opossums, is short lived. Do you know of any place that keeps them currently?

The zoo @Giant Eland posted photographs from is the only public collection I know that keeps them, though I do know they are around in the private sector also so regardless of whether or not they're kept in zoos currently they are around in the US.

Apparently, there is/was a breeder in Tampa Bay:

Exotic Animals For Sale

And also, one for sale in Michigan:

Exotic Animals For Sale

Thank you and @ThylacineAlive as well!

After Thylo's post I emailed the current cuscus posting as well as postings for 4-eyed opossums (in case they were a species different from Philander opossum) and 1 for Mouse Opossums. I also saw a pair of Yapok listed recently but didn't email about that since I've already seen that species.

It's been a couple days already and unfortunately I haven't heard anything back yet.
