Papiliorama - Kerzers Papiliorama news

A relatively quick last-minute visit to Kerzers was the first time I came here in 3 years. Not much has changed in that time, though a breeding centre has been added to the Nocturnal zoo. The breeding centre has 8 enclosures for multiple breeding groups of Prehensile-tailed porcupine (4 breeding pairs across the zoo), Douroucouli (at least 3 breeding pairs across the zoo), Lowland paca (present in 7 enclosures throughout the zoo) and Two-toed sloth (in 3 enclosures throughout the zoo). Anaconda and Caiman have been removed from the nocturnal house. But "new" are Cloud rats and Crab-eating raccoons.

In the Jungle Trek greenhouse a group of at least 5 Yucatan jays (second holding in Europe) have been added to the Peccary enclosure and new in the freeflight area are Indigo bunting (only public holding in Europe). The lone Mockingbird is also still alive. The Yucatan squirrels have also been moved to the Jungle trek, but are currently only in a separation cage. Their former enclosure is now inhabited by Spectacled owls (still with Agouti). The former insectarium has been replaced by a modern education display about butterflies. Many of the invertebrates are now kept in the bat tunnel in the nocturnal part.

Though many parts are nicely done and the species selection is very good for such a small establishment, I still can't really warm to this zoo, so probably this will have been my last visit for quite some time....

Worldwide, as in they import species from SE Asia (e.g. Philipines), Kenya, Tanzania and Costa rica. There are about 60 species signed in their walk through, but I doubt they are all present at the same time... They also have a big outdoor butterfly walk through, but that is limited to a few common native species and the species kept there really varies between seasons and years.

Be interested in the species listing, especially the ones from Philippines, ... I guess Malaysia and Kenya+Tanzania. Hope for some rare ones, also with ex situ and in situ components (THIS knowing Kerzers track record).

I didn't take any pictures of the signage unfortunately, so I can't answer this for you....

I saw a pair of Yellow-bellied sunbirds (of which the female was collecting nesting material) and two other species were signed, but I did not see them, though I possibly did hear them.
 
I was on the Papillorama’s website and was disappointed to see the updated species list.
Many of the interesting species in the bird department are not there anymore, they’re left with only 8 species of birds.

Between this and the many bird species gone from Zürich, the little swiss zoo world may have lost a good part of its species highlights.

How well can you trust that list though, zoo websites are notoriously unreliable and looking at the mammal list, these lists are far from complete...

You’re right. I’m going to contact them and then visit the place if I don’t get an answer.
 
The two Crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) brothers now live in an outside enclosure near the "animal kitchen", previously they were kept in Nocturama

Apparently Papiliorama keeps Red-eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidryas) behind the scenes.

A male Keel-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) arrived from Ouwehands Dierenpark to accompany the already present female.

In July a new species arrived at the zoo: Pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea). I am not sure whether they received no subspecies-status or Western/Eastern marmosets.

In May 10 Ringed teals (Callonetta leucophrys) hatched.

Not 100% sure but maybe a Brazilian porcupine (Coendou prehensilis) was born this year. Also 5 Brazilian porcupines that were born in Papiliorama in the last 2 years were send to different zoos in France, Germany, Czech Republic and Spain. Mid June a male was send to Faunia Madrid, where he will be paired to the already present female.

In February a Southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) was born and a few months later another Southern tamandua was born.

In December (2020) a Grey-handed Night Monkey (Aotus lemurinus griseimembra) was born.

At the start of this year a crowned pigeon hatched, according to ZTL Papiliorama doesn't have a species of crowned pigeon. Does someone know which species they have, I am thinking about Victoria crowned-pigeons (Goura victoria).

On the photo there is clearly a Victoria crowned pigeon with young pictured :).
 
Birth of a Brazilian Porcupine.
Unfortunately its mother died soon after the birth.
The baby grows normally.

C'est grâce aux efforts infatigables de nos gardiens d'animaux sauvages que la petite créature est aujourd'hui tirée d'affaire et peut désormais vivre avec son père dans notre station d'élevage."
