What's the worst animal-related smell you've ever experienced at work?

I heard from a keeper today that the smell of a dirty otter enclosure literally made one of his interns throw up and then pass out. I asked him 3 times to make sure that wasn't an exaggeration. He said it was not.

That's...pretty spectacular to me! Anyone have any experience in that department?

No, but not too surprised... otters are mustelids, and fish-eaters at that... smelly combination.

Some people pass out pretty quickly for various reasons. When I taught students at a university, I had a few cases of (mostly very slim young female) students collapsing, often due to not eating, drinking and sleeping properly beforehand (or drinking too much the previous night). This tended to happen most often in the morning, during surgeries (one >100 kg bloke almost fainted onto the surgery table once) and in the necropsy room. Outside of the latter two, I kept water, biscuits etc. ready to get them back on their feet when needed. So the smell might only have been the final of many factors to make said intern faint.

Oh wow, I've heard otters stink! What does it smell like exactly? Can you smell the fish in the poop, or does something else make it bad, or what?
There’s definitely a fishy smell to it, but it’s much worse than just fish. I don’t really know how to describe it other than god-awful.

Ah, wow! So it smells completely different than the poop of other animals even? Has it made you gag, or worse?

Do you work with otters then?
