NAC (National Aquarium cup)

Inspired by @pachyderm pro ‘s zoo contest and the original formatting of @CGSwans, I decided that I wanted to do one for the aquariums in the United States. Many of these aquariums are considered world class if not the best in the world. So I wanted to see which of these aquariums will make number one in the world of zoochat. I feel this will be pretty even with some of these aquariums but we won’t know till the polls come up. These are the aquariums that will compete in this competition.

Monterey bay aquarium
Georgia aquarium
Shedd aquarium
Aquarium of the pacific
Seattle aquarium
National aquarium at Baltimore
Tennessee aquarium (Chattanooga)
Ripley’s aquarium of the smokies
Newport aquarium
Dallas world aquarium
Steinhart aquarium
New England aquarium

(Please note that all aquariums must come from the USA)

If there is an aquarium that you feel should be in this competition, I’ll add it as long there is an even number of aquariums in the competition. The aquariums will be matched together using a randomizer. Your vote will be based on a certain category but it won’t just be animals, it will also be exhibit themes. This will be match one. Afterwards will be semifinals and finals. The first match will be poster tomorrow. Let the best aquarium win!

A couple of things:

It would be nice to give credit where it's due, which in this case means CGSwans, who developed and implemented the ZooCup format.

I assume this is only for American aquariums? Better to make that clear at this point too.

My apologies. I thought it was @pachyderm pro who started this. I gave @CGSwans his proper credit.

I did mention that this was for US aquariums in the beginning but I’ll edit it to make it more clear.

If you refer back to the conclusion of the ZooChat Cup final between Prague and Berlin (which I'm aware you might not have read) I already stated that @ZooBinh has expressed interest in running an aquarium-themed edition of the Cup. I think it's only fair to let them have their chance, on a first-in, best-dressed basis.

(I also think it's best to have a single game running at a time.)

Well I guess I wasted everyone’s time making this thread. I’ll let @ZooBinh take control of the competition and change the rules as he sees fit.

I was going to say I thought this was the case.

@TheEthiopianWolf03 It might have been better to have included more aquariums as well, as 12 collections would make a very short challenge. I can also think of an aquarium or two that deserved a spot on your list, and certainly many others do as well.

Well, whoever actually starts an aquarium-based competition will definitely want more facilities on the list than the dozen that were mentioned at the beginning of this thread. Mystic Aquarium, Oregon Coast Aquarium, Adventure Aquarium and New York Aquarium would be 4 more that I would add on in order to make a "round of 16" competition but of course the USA has 150 public aquariums and so there are many more candidates as well.

This competition, if run well, is a fantastic idea but we should probably wait until the zoo "cup" is finished.

Yes, whoever starts this cup I would appreciate waiting until season 2 wraps up, which would be a little over a month from now. And here's an idea. May I recommend doing a world wide aquarium challenge? It seems strange to limit it just to the US when one could at least double to amount of facilities currently if one includes other countries. Vancouver, Lisbon, Valencia, Blue Planet, Okinawa Churaumi, Shanghai, Turkuazoo and Dubai could be just a few.

That's what I was planning for

It's going to be a real shame when fish and invertebrates never actually appear in the game ;) :p

Hehe. I may have silently removed that category without acknowledging it for the entirety of the game ;). After hearing comments how it isn't the most interesting, and realizing that zoos rarely list their fish species making it annoyingly hard to find what zoo contains what, I cut it. I planned on addressing it, but I really have not had time to do much on here outside the regular matches.

Don't worry though, I still didn't fix any of the matches ;):p.

1. Fish
2. Herps
3. Birds
4. Invertebrates
5. Cetaceans
6. Other Mammals
I was thinking something like this:

Saltwater Fish
Freshwater Fish
Aquatic Mammals
Seabirds
Aquatic Herps
Crustaceans
Coral, Anemones, Sea Pens
Other Aquatic Inverts
Land Animals

I was thinking something like that too, but a bit different.

Then the entire point of the game is lost. Might as well do a single poll, asking people to name their favourite aquarium.

I'm not sure about this. Not all aquariums have fresh water fish, or mammals, or birds. I think there's to much variance to make categories.
