Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2018

Fifteen minutes ago, Brookfield Zoo announced the birth of a baby gorilla. Koola is her mother. JoJo is most likely the father, as he is the only breeding male around.
Is that not his 3rd sired young there and since he is on a 10 year loan I forget how long he has been there since

He has been at BZ since 2012 and this new baby is his 3rd offspring there.
Wonder of after he is done being on the 10 year loan if lincoln park zoo is going to take him back and restart another family troop and send on of the bachelor's from the bacheor troop to brookfield or if they are just going to keep Jojo till he hits the retirement stage

He will most likely stay at BZ for the rest of his life, unless if SSP ends up recommending something different.

I'm definitely excited about this news, but I'm generally skeptical of zoos' motivations when they wait this long to publicize news like this and wish they would instead do so immediately.
I am excited and agree with this policy line though. Esp. with carnivores and first few litters it is better to have them see thru the first few critical months! I have seen and heard too many cases where they even before a birth announced and set up cameras only for the cubs never to appear, stillbirths, birth complications or even the female not making it in a difficult birth. So, I can really see why ...!

For what it is worth: Is it just me ..., or is it that in the last year or so quite a few new births have been announced for Amur leopard in the US / AZA SSP camp (and even transfers overseas to set up new breeding pairs in the US)?

It's nothing new with Brookfield. They rarely will announce births (and even new zoo residents) right away.

It has been a good year so far for Amir Leopard births. A pair in Vienna born March 27th, two females born at San Diego Zoo April 5th, Two males born at Brookfield Zoo April 18th and a female born at Hogle Zoo May 9th. Those are all I am aware of but there may be others.

CORRECTION I think info on the one female born May 9th at Hogle is wrong so disregard that one.

Sterling, the zoo's last remaining harbor seal, now resides at the Oregon Zoo and is doing well.
