Things people do that irritate you when you go to the zoo? #2

Another thing that annoys me is when guests ask if an animal we haven’t had for years is still here.

This one doesn't seem too heinous, assuming that the guests who are asking haven't been to that zoo in a long time. Maybe they can only visit it every few years or so because of its distance from home, maybe due to funds, or maybe they just don't keep up with the zoo's collections with the intensity that we ZooChatters do. :D

People also try to grab birds as they fly past . I went to Australia zoo a couple of years ago and in the big walk through aviary and a young boy ( his mum was on the phone and his dad was walking his sisters to look at the birds ) suddenly grabbed a bird as it flew past the bird bit him and he screamed and the mother told me why I wasn’t looking after him

I DONT EVEN KNOW THE KID

Ya that's not good...

So glad it bit him!

Lol what...it's a zoo,you go there to observe and learn about animals....
Most people do not visit zoos to observe and learn; they go there to have a good time (mostly with the family, in particular smaller kids) and entertain themselves. I'm even pretty sure that most ZooChatters do not always go to zoos with the determination to learn something...;)

Yeah I think I made myself a fool there but yeah you’re right too...last time I went to the zoo because it was my birthday and Zoo Negara has a free entry for anyone that has a birthday in December and I went with my mom to watch animals have a good time and I educate her about some animals too lol like she thought porcupines actually shoot their quils and I corrected her

I'm volunteering at the Central Park Zoo for a few days of the week over the Summer as a quest guide.
The amount of times I've been asked where the lions and zebras are is staggering- I don't think Madagascar did the zoo any favors...
Another thing I've noticed is that when we explain to the kids what skulls belong to what animal and what they eat, it would seem that nearly every kid believes that the skull of a grizzly bear belongs to a dinosaur of some sort. I can't really blame them though considering the only bones they've ever seen probably comes from local visits to the Natural History Museum with its plethora of dino fossils.

Yeah, no kidding. I've actually seen people give the zoo bad reviews because it lacks those 4 African animals Dreamworks featured. And the less I say about Madagascar 3 the better; this movie pretty much tells all the kiddies at hpme and their gullible parents that animals are happier in a circus rather than a zoo... Yeah, the more I think about the impact of the Madagascar movies, the more I dislike them.

People will give any zoo bad reviews because it lacks their favorite animals. I saw a review of the Minnesota Zoo that said it was awful because there were no Giraffes.

To be fair, I was pretty disappointed when I was a kid to find out that there wasn't a perfect square of exhibits in Central Park for the 'Madgascar 4' that perfectly recaptured the film haha, or even a concrete block in some water with waving penguins (even if those enclosure designs always made the young zoo-tycoon player in me so mad)

And I know I've said this before, but if I had a penny for every time at the wildcat enclosure I've heard "That just looks like a big tabby," "Oh look *kid's name*, it looks just like *cat's name*!", "Why is that in a zoo? It's just a housecat.", I would be a very rich man indeed.

The worst part is there's often another member of their party or a poor, beleaguered volunteer desperately trying to convince them that they're a different species, but to no avail.

I've always wanted to see a wildcat, especially a pure Scottish one, so that grinds my gears something fierce! The less people care about their distinctiveness the less they'll care about them being hybridized unendingly with feral cats until the subspecies proper is gone. But they both look the same so what's the big deal, right?

I can get relating it to your pet, I see my own cat in felids of every size. But it doesn't take a lot of brainpower to realize that decent zoos generally don't plop house pets in enclosures and lie about what they are. Explaining just what house cats were domesticated from might pique people's interest, even if Felis lybica is no longer under silvestris. My family was fascinated and enamored when shown African wildcats out on the savanna in a BBC documentary, especially since our Tabitha is the spitting image of one :)

While we’re on the subject of cats, people always seem to call any spotted cat they see in the zoo a cheetah. I can understand getting jaguars and leopards mixed up, but cheetahs have a very distinct and recognizeable body shape compared to other cats!
Even Doug Walker, AKA the Nostalgia Critic makes this mistake when reviewing Disney's Tarzan... When he could have looked up info on Wikipedia!
