The park have recently submitted a planning application for the area of woodland between the lemurs and hunting dogs to house 5 rescued arboreal animals. It states on the application that due to the sensitive nature of the rescue and the animals involved they can’t be named at this time.

It seems to be a simple house with 6 separate enclosures with a 3m high fence and a raised walkway around the outside to aid viewing.

Going to be really interesting to see what happens with this and what the species may be, it does mention that their diet is meat, fruit and vegetables and that they will be treated in a similar manner to the other carnivorous species held.

They won't announce anything until planning has gone through and the animals are in the enclosures! Especially if this is a rescue effort, it will be kept completely under wraps.

I have to agree and I think after recent rescue attempts that have been made public have been scuppered by reports in the “home” zoos local media it’s probably the right decision.

The planning application is for the hotel, parking, shops and visitor facilities. Further applications will have to be made for the new enclosures but I think this is a great move and as recent applications are in the areas leading up to where the bridge to the new area is I think we can expect movement quite soon.

There only seems to be a small bit of wetland water behind the Polar Bears and Tigers, surely that's not big enough to have ships ;) :P

Any news on the rescue animals yet?
 
Also with the big expansion to the other side of the site, over the wetland area (always thought that area would make a great Crocodile / Alligator swamp) , is the entrance going to be on that side of the park, or will they have two entrances ? One on either side, as I'm trying to think what road you would take to get to the other side, as it would be way out of town, and further away from the M81.

The planned entrance is to be on the new site with all new car parks as there has been loads of complaints about the junction on the existing entrance. I’m guessing this will free up the current parking for more enclosures.

There is 1 major obstacle with changing the current car-park into animal enclosures, and that is the public footpath/bridle-path that runs alongside the current access road and all the way through the property, passed the rear of the baboons and hunting dog enclosures,and on to Branton village. Would need some expensive bridges or tunnels to give disabled access to that part of the complex. Maybe they could put the Elephants in that area and incorporate them into the indoor viewing complex ;)
 
And not just any Brown Bears, but Ussuri Brown Bears, U. a. lasiotus - only kept at one other European Zoo (Bern). :)

We spoke to Cheryl Williams during the consultation event and she said the existing carpark will be still be there, but the new entrance will be the main one with a much larger carpark.
