Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion, Speculation & Questions 2018

In four recent visits I've seen K'tusha but never him so I would suspect he's either still nesting or I'm very unlucky.

Thanks, I thought he was. When do they emerge out of this period, other okapi calves at other zoos seemed to make their appearances in a month or so, Semuliki is taking his time.

He will be out when he is out Chester do not force youngsters on view so you will just have to wait! When he wants to make an appearance he will be seen until then he can do what he wants.

Has the young okapi ‘Semuliki’ come out of his ‘nesting period’ where he hides as a natural defence against predators.
Also, which enclosure is he being kept in, just wondering as I assume they swap the individuals around.

He's in and out (opposite the Red River Hogs as Nisha says) - I've seen him twice (both mid-afternoon) in two visits. He seems bolshier than either of Stuma's calves, but maybe I've just been fortunate.

Patience with it, but be aware by 6 months they are nearly adult size.

Must say I’m very tempted to bid on some of the signs on auction but I don’t have the money, must save it for birthdays coming up and I don’t think they’d like animal signs :p

According to zootierliste they have Grandidier’s Vontsira (Galidictis grandidieri) and White-tailed antsangy (Brachytarsomys albicauda) now. If this proves accurate at least the mongoose is likely to have come from Todd Dalton (former owner of the Rare Species Conservation Centre) as he is trying to set up a captive breeding programme for these and have advertised available animals on various facebook groups.

I take it these are two new species for the zoo, if ZTL is to be believed.

Weren't there supposed to be some mongoose in the new development for the lions? Could it be these?

I’d imagine as they are Madagascan species they’ll go in the Madagascar zone of the zoo when it is fully completed in a few years time. As for those that will go with the new lion area I imagine they’ll be an Indian or south Asian species.

Whether the new Madagascan mammals will go on show at all, I'm not sure. I was under the impression that the narrow-striped boky that have been at Chester for several years now are not planned to go on show for the foreseeable future (for whatever reason that might be).

They have nowhere to put them.

Maybe when Grasslands is done they could fit in a new Giraffe house. Berlin Tierpark does the same.

Well they can hardly walk the Giraffes across the zoo and back every day from the current house to an exhibit in Grasslands can they?!

As for the Mole Rats - they'll go onshow when the zoo is ready. If your that impatient the go to Dudley, Bristol or somewhere else that already has them onshow

I think it’s likely more than a coincidence that Chester have brought in a number of new Madagascan species at around the same time that they are constructing a Madagascan-themed zone in the middle of the zoo. While Narrow-Striped Boky, Tenrecs etc. may not be part of the current development, there’s nothing to say there cannot or will not be further phases in the future. It seems that the zoo is building a collection based largely around its conservation programmes and this fits the bill.

I diddn't mean a new house being fitted, I meant an exhibit for mole rats could be there.
