ZooChat Big Year 2018

I don't like to post a seperate reply for every little invert I see, so I usually just wait till I have more additions. This time however, the first dragonfly in the list is such a rarity that I didn't want to wait!

Mammals
13. North American River Otter Lontra canadensis

Birds
134. Clay-Colored Sparrow Spizella pallida

*Also several terns. I know the species that occur in the area, and the terns I saw were likely a mix of two species, both of which would be new to my year list. But, I forgot my binoculars, and wasn't able to confirm identification.

Inverts
16. Cecropia Moth Hyalophora cecropia
Two birds from yesterday:

Birds
135. Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia
136. Eurasian Collared-Dove Streptopelia decaocto

And some random inverts from the past couple moths:

Inverts
17. Japanese Beetle Popillia japonica
18. Common House Spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum
19. Yellow Garden Argiope Argiope aurantia

So, I looked for these during the entirety of June and obviously found none so I concluded they were all in Spain/Southern Europe but while walking in a forest near a golf course (where they are known to occur readily), I found a single individual flying quite close. :p

80 - Greater flamingo, Phoenicopterus roseus

Definitely the highlight of this month and although this latter was very poor in additions, the two new species seen were both cool

Went birding near Tifnit beach (i.e near Souss-Massa National Park) and I had one of the most wonderful birding session since the beginning of the year, namely because of two species (although one isn't countable).

MAMMALS:
-) Scimitar-horned oryx, Oryx dammah*

BIRDS:
81 - Cream-coloured courser, Cursorius cursor

The courser was one of the best sightings of this year because although I knew they lived in that area, it was totally unexpected (and they are just very cool birds, those black wings are very charismatic!). I've also seen tons of Acanthodactylus sp. but I didn't bring my camera with me so I don't have any photo and as such, cannot identify them. Will try to get back and get some pictures though (and if I could get some clear shots of the coursers as well, that would be nice! :P )

*Found right by the fence border of Souss Massa NP, after a quick search I found out that they were in rehabilitation pens awaiting for them to acclimate well so they can release them back to the Sahara. Since they can't roam the whole reserve and that they are basically in huge exhibits, they aren't countable but still a very nice found, in my opinion; and a semi-wild/semi-captive lifer (depends on whether you see the glass as half-full or hall-empty).

880) Fairy Tern
881) Pacific Gull

165) Southern Brown Bandicoot

I've just finished adding my birds from Malaysia into the HBW sightings system and I can add:

All splits on HBW which is the checklist I use. Mostly quite new splits:
882) Grey-hooded Babbler (a Bornean endemic split from Chestnut-winged Babbler which was seen in Taman Negara as well as in lots of places in Borneo)
883) Chestnut-vented Bulbul (a Bornean montane endemic, split from Ochraceous Bulbul)
884) Green-winged/Sociable Bulbul (a Bornean montane/hill endemic, split from Cinereous Bulbul which is split from Ashy Bulbul)

Missed from Danum:
885) Large-billed Blue-flycatcher

I can confirm that bird-wise in Malaysia, I saw 401 species, of which 259 were lifers.

That includes 39 Bornean endemics and 168 species photographed.

Migration counting has begun! Although just another warbler to some people, this bird was a lifer for me and the very first of its species to appear on 'our' migration site.

Birds
220. Icterine warbler [Hippolais icterina]

Just 5 more to reach my goal of 225 species!

275. Wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)

Been looking through some eBird distribution maps and need to make a couple of changes:

259. Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) should be Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
267. Northern Harrier (Circus hudsonius) was probably a misidentified hawk, either red-shouldered (Buteo lineatus) or red-tailed (Buteo jamaicensis)

The new 267 is: Hairy Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus villosus), which I was misidentifying as additional Downy Woodpeckers (Dryobates pubescens).

As for new additions...

276. Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina)

I've also been researching locations where I can easily see new mammals like bison, pronghorn, and prairie dogs on my way back to California later this month so that I can keep adding to my mammal total. Depending on what mini-trips I take over there before Christmas, I might be able to top 60 species.

All additions since late June...

885) Large-billed Blue-flycatcher

I can confirm that bird-wise in Malaysia, I saw 401 species, of which 259 were lifers.

HBW Split:

886) Plumed Egret (Australian Intermediate Egret)

Missed off species:

887) Brolga
888) Red-tailed Black-cockatoo
889) White-throated Honeyeater

New ones:

890) Fairy Martin
891) Little Crow

I have realised I haven't updated my year list recently. The first three new invertebrates were just chance sightings either while out and about or attracted into the house. The new fish and the three latter new invertebrates were all the result of a training day today - no need to guess which species was my highlight for today.

7. North Sea bullhead Cottus perifretum *

62. Zebra spider Salticus scenicus
63. Fencepost jumping spider Marpissa muscosa
64. Drinker moth Euthrix potatoria
65. White-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes (En)
66. Twin-lobed deerfly Chrysops relictus
67. American signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus

* I made up the common name for this species, considering it is now part of a species complex so just 'bullhead' doesn't really suffice, and it is found on either side of the North Sea.

Over the past few days, I have managed to add another mammal (my first identified bat of the year, somewhat surprisingly), another fish and four new invertebrates, including a pleasantly nerdish addition seen while observing the nightly-visiting hedgehogs.

11. Soprano pipistrelle bat Pipistrellus pygmaeus

8. Eurasian minnow Phoxinus phoxinus

68. Common darter dragonfly Sympetrum striolatum
69. Green shield bug Palomena prasina
70. Hedgehog tick Ixodes hexagonus
71. Sleepy carpenter bee Chelostoma florisomne

276. Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerine)

Updates from today's morning outing by the Potomac River:

277. Double-breasted Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus)
278. Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor)
279. Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis)
280. Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus)
281. Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea)

The terrain was too muddy and mosquitoes too painful and relentless for me to stay for long... and the cormorant I didn't even see at the river, I saw it flying overhead as I was passing a shopping plaza on the way back!

Two birds from yesterday:

Birds
135. Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia
136. Eurasian Collared-Dove Streptopelia decaocto

And some random inverts from the past couple moths:

Inverts
17. Japanese Beetle Popillia japonica
18. Common House Spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum
19. Yellow Garden Argiope Argiope aurantia
Found a rare butterfly today:

Inverts
20. Giant Swallowtail Papilio cresphontes

This species has been turning up in very unusual large numbers in Wisconsin, and the species is being seen farther north than normal.

280. Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus)

I realized upon review that I saw and recorded this species and Red-Tailed Hawk earlier in January, meaning that they have both been listed twice. Removing those entries brings my updated species count down to 279.

I spent this weekend birding in the Northern Netherlands again, mainly to find a very rare Spur-winged lapwing that has been hanging around for about two weeks now, and is believed to be a second calendar year individual from Eastern Europe (hasn't been confirmed yet, but is viewed by most people as countable; should evidence eventually point to this animal being an escapee I will of course remove it from the list). In the surrounding areas I also twitched a Marbled teal and Bufflehead, two very rare vagrant ducks, but the origin of those animals has not yet been looked into, so I'll refrain from counting them unless they get accepted by the local authorities.

BIRDS:
296) Spur-winged lapwing, Vanellus spinosus
297) Temminck's stint, Calidris temminckii

298) Curlew sandpiper, Calidris ferruginea
299) Ruddy shelduck, Tadorna ferruginea
300) Caspian tern, Hydroprogne caspia

Pictures of the lapwing will follow shortly!

Not many additions during the summer months, causing that my last post was posted in the Q2 thread. I've fallen behind on properly listing inverts but I may pick this up again when I have the time.
MAMMALS
9. Bank Vole (Myodes glareolus)

BIRDS

166. Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)

And the following species officially depicting my return to the United Kingdom.
167. Little Owl (Athene noctua)
168. Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella)
169. Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa)
