Most exotic animals seen on the pet trade

Let me learn you guys a thing. Under the MMPA, all marine mammals (so cetaceans, sirenians, pinnipeds, sea otters, and polar bears) can only be imported into the US primarily for public display (as a general rule, exceptions are made for research or military facilities) and said facilities must be at BARE MINIMUM a USDA licensed facility. So Ken never actually had these animals, as others have said. He merely had them available to him as a transhipper. They were still in range countries. I know that some South American Sea Lion were brought up into the states, most likely through Ken, for a small private company based out of I believe Florida, however other than that no marine mammals were ever actually imported by Ken.

So basically he offered these animals for people that wanted to sell them but didn't want to offer.

A few zoos in Europe have acquired Hammerhead bats (Hypsignathus monstrosus) recently, they have even poped up for sale at few petshops in the UK specializing in exotic animals. Seeing as how most bats are rare in private hands (apart from maybe Egyptian Rousette and Straw-coloured Fruit bat) it would be interesting to know the source of these.

Do you also know where they got them from?

Ken personally kept mainly smaller marsupial species, I believe; everything beyond that, he was a broker for, so who knows if the manatees even existed or if someone just wanted to see if there might be interest, should they be able to get some. He got out of animals all together a few years ago because he got fed up with the lack of support and activism in the community, according to him.

Does anyone here know which pet shops?

I have an acquaintane/fb friend who keeps a springhare and a pair of Chacoan maras. She had them from a breeder from Texas.

A pair of polar bears offered around three years ago, was for me the most exotic. Other memorable exotic species: king + lesser + magnificent bird of paradise, spotted hyenas, shoebilled stork, adult pair of giraffe and wallaroe.

Shoebilled stork? I wonder where they were offered, im guessing not in europe or america.

No, they were in different places and countries. Only the B.O.P. were offered in the same country, and probably by the same broker than the shoebilled.

Shoe-billed storks are on CITES appendix II. And also the legislation on importing mammals into the EU is much weaker than on birds. Legale import of birds into EU is almost completely banned since Avian Influenza became endemic in Southeast Asia. So legal import wil be extremely difficult and almost only possible between zoos. And most European zoos don't sell to private people, so also thru a zoo is almost impossible.
