Akron Zoo Akron Zoo News 2018

It is August 1st and we are still waiting for an official announcement. Let's hope one is made by the time Wild Asia opens in 2020.

A new octopus has moved into Curious Creatures.

The back portion of the Pride of Africa construction area has been smoothed out and marked with markers. To borrow a phrase from coaster enthusiasts, vertical construction looks like it may happen soon. I would think it would be announced before construction begins. But after this wait, who knows.

Akron Zoo’s Director of Animal Operations Pete Mohan is retiring. He was formerly at SeaWorld of Ohio and Six Flags Worlds of Adventure. He is the reason for the zoo’s aquatic exhibits.

The bald eagle exhibit now has six residents. It is so rare that they are all in view, I finally heard a confirmation on Saturday.

The zoo will be on WKYC Channel 3 News Monday morning. They will be there throughout their broadcast. Fingers crossed that an announcement may finally be made while their at the zoo.

The zoo appears to be looking for placement for the zoo's white storks. I guess they are not part of Pride of Africa.

The names for the musk deer fawn and the penguin chick will be announced August 24th. I am not sure why the wait or why that date.

I really don’t want to be a downer, but I just don’t feel that the Akron Zoo will make an announcement about Pride of Africa and Wild Asia.

I want to take back my previous statement. There will be an announcement, in my opinion. We just need to be patient.

There will be an announcement. You do not spend tax payer money on a project and not make an announcement. It will be presented at AZA in over a month’s time. There will not be an announcement in October, November, and December most likely because of Boo at the Zoo and Wild Lights.

Would someone be able to inform me as to which enclosures contain Scaly-sided mergansers please? And if you could point me in the direction to photos of the enclosure, I would appreciate that too. Thank you.

They are in the waterfowl exhibit at the entrance of Legends of the Wild. The link has one side of the exhibit. There is another side of the exhibit. It is divided by a bridge.

I think Pride of Africa may have grown. More trees are missing behind the grizzly bear exhibit. There are signs in the Welcome Center saying the bears may be in their bedrooms due to construction. There is visible construction work going on, but that is drainage work near the train. There appears to be a corridor cleared of trees along the old Perkins Park Drive going behind the condor exhibit. There is a Touch-A-Truck event next Sunday. Maybe we will hear something this week since people will start asking questions. Especially with Community Days for Summit County residents/taxpayers are throughout September.

Some more notes from today. The kids area with the rope bridge in the corner of Legends of the Wild is being renovated to a kids area with the rope bridge and a tunnel for kids. The area with advertise the zoo's Cans for Corridors program.

There are only four spotted jellies in Curious Creatures. I expect a species change could occur soon. The map pufferfish is no longer listed for the triggerfish exhibit. Striped burrfish and yellowhead wrasse have been added to the exhibit.
