ZooChat Challenge (Global) 2018

Just returned from a mini zoo road trip with some new carnivore sightings!

Smithsonian National Zoo

85. spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus)
86. Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinerea)
87. black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes)
88. fennec fox (Vulpes zerda)
89. grey seal (Halichoerus grypus)
90. maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus)
91. North American river otter (Lontra canadensis)
92. sand cat (Felis margarita)
93. striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis)
94. white-nosed coati (Nasua narica)

Probably going to be a pretty different looking set of species in the 80-90 range compared to most people haha- but I'm under the unique condition of discovering this challenge late and going to my first home country zoos in August.

In DC the Bobcat was off exhibit (and apparantly has been ever since it escaped a year or 2 ago, and Red Panda didn't show for me haha so I'll have to wait on that one. Unrelated to carnivores but got some great views of the Common Opossum as well.

Catoctin which I also visited (for their Booted Macaques of course!) has ringtails listed on their website map from 2015 but I didn't notice this beforehand and was pressed for time while I was there anyways.

Pictures coming soon!

You went to Taman Safari earlier this year!? Did you see the Sunda Clouded Leopards or Bay Cat!? Was the Sulawesi palm civet still around?

EDIT- I just saw you mentioned seeing the Sunda Clouded! Luckyyyy!! They were completely off show for breeding purposes when I was there, such a shame!!

Yeah I saw one Sunda cloudie but I had no idea the Bay cat was there. There is a question about what the Golden palm civets really are as well.

I'm a little bit out of date with my list myself, I'll try and get it all up today.

Noticed 2 more I missed (both have photos posted in gallery)

95. smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) (Dusit Zoo)
96. meerkat (Suricata suricatta) (Smithsonian National Zoo)

This slightly late update marks the end of my European zoo visiting for the year; from now on, barring unforeseen circumstances, I will be limited to what I can see in Asia. As always, in true 'purple hosier' style my goal is a podium finish; this year seems to be more competitive than previous and top ten may well be an achievement in itself.

For transparency I'll point out that two of my species (Golden Palm Civet and Northern Fur Seal) have had their signage questioned. Until it's proven otherwise I'll be trusting the zoos in question, but I am following that up.

I have quite a few more visits planned, but only one of them is a true 'broadside'. The others will probably be slim pickings, although quite a few of them are dark horses I know nothing about.

Not many members have seen a linsang, and even fewer have been to this collection. What were your impressions of it?
