Top 10...

First time I've made a thread in quite some time... how do I begin, again?...

To spruce up the variety of my YouTube Channel: Zoo Tours - I will be borrowing the idea from other popular channels to create Top 10/Top 5 Lists - Zoo edition. Similar to what Zoonation.org does, except these of course will be in video form. Other than to expand the popularity of my page, I hope these will further give non-zoo fanatics reasons to broaden their interest in these parks. To find an animal they've never heard of, or to see some of the world's most unique attractions. The list below is what will featured... so far. Whatever is labelled as incomplete, I'd love to hear what you believe belongs in that certain category. If you have any more "Top 10/Top 5" suggestions, I'd like to hear them as well, and I'll try my best to cover them. I'd like to note that almost all of these will only cover zoos in North America for the time being.

10 Rare Animals in U.S. Zoos & Where to Find Them (Ten animals that are somewhat well-known to the public (and some that need to be) but are only found in one or two zoos in the country. The list is completed)

Top 10 Zoo Oddities (Odd objects you'd find in zoos, or just odd exhibits in general. Nothing is on the list, but am hoping for some help on this one)

10 Unique Mixed U.S. Exhibits (Self-explanatory - List is incomplete, can work on this myself but it would be nice to hear a list that is boiled down to ten options)

10 Amazing Exhibit Transformations (Honestly, not necessarily "exhibit transformations" but rather "animals that received better homes after being in horrid conditions". Example, Dallas Zoo's Elephants. That is the only one I have so far)

10 Best U.S. Gorilla Exhibits (I have 9 so far)

5 Best U.S. Orangutan Exhibits (Complete)

10 Best Exhibits of Their Kind/Worst of Their Kind (Incomplete, the idea is too broad)

10 Modern Exhibits You’re Glad No Longer Exist (Incomplete - outdated exhibits that were only recently demolished/being revamped. Ex. Kansas City's Orangutan exhibit, Kovler Lion House, Fort Worth's hippo corner)

5 Unique Walk-Through Exhibits (Incomplete - I've got nothing so far)

5 Amazing Indoor Elephant Exhibits in the U.S. (Incomplete)

10 Largest Elephant Complexes in the U.S. (Complete)

Top 10 Best U.S. African Savannah Exhibits (Complete)

Top 5 Predator & Prey Concepts (Complete - Arctic Ring of Life, Columbus, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Bronx - but I am open to more suggestions)

10 Unexpected Animals in Aquariums (Incomplete - only have seven listed. Hippos, tiger, tiger again, long-tailed macaque, ocelot, clouded leopard, snow monkey.....)

10 Most Unique U.S. Zoo Exhibits (Incomplete - only Indy's Dolphin Dome and Sea Lion Sound are listed)

What's your preliminary list for unique mixed-species exhibits? Maybe I can provide some insight. Also, go for what you think can appeal to as many people as possible, then going into more interesting topics.

What's your preliminary list for unique mixed-species exhibits?

Anything that relates to well-known animals. Giraffes with penguins, herbivore with carnivore, etc.

Also, go for what you think can appeal to as many people as possible, then going into more interesting topics.

Kind of hard to appeal to a less specific crowd when the channel will forever only relate to zoos;)

Here are my suggestions for topics:

Top indoor rainforests/deserts
Top tiger/lion/bear exhibits
Top aquariums in zoos
Top zoo rides (chairlifts, trains, monorails, etc.)

For top 10 zoo oddities, I think anyone who doesn’t know the concept of Elephant Oddysey at SDZ would be confused by the species exhibited there. I know I was! You can also use Scutes Family Gallery at Cheyenne Mountain. It definitely is unique and many people on this forum and in general that I’ve talked to have never seen reptiles exhibited like that. Just check the gallery if you don’t know what I mean. I can also get more pictures of it if needed. I guess these both can go under most unique exhibits too.

For best walkthrough exhibits, the aviaries at SDZ are spectacular. You could spend all day in the three big ones. Maybe also look at some zoo’s Australia exhibits as many of those are walk through.

For indoor elephant exhibits, I don’t think anyone can argue that Omaha’s isn’t the best. Most places with the best outdoor enclosures don’t seem to give guests indoor viewing from what I’ve seen (LA, SDZSP, Saint Louis) so some smaller exhibits may be able to shine here.

I think the Florida Aquarium Wetland Trails is a very good one, along with DAK's Gorilla Exploration Trail Aviary is very superb.
St. Louis' Cypress Swamp.

As for the mixed species exhibits, here are a few weird ones that you may want to use:

  • Northern Raccoon/Red Fox - Minnesota Zoo
  • Great Horned Owl/North American Porcupine - Minnesota Zoo
  • Northern White-Cheeked Gibbon/Lesser Flamingo - Minnesota Zoo
  • American Black Bear/Chukar/Great Horned Owl - Ochsner Park Zoo
  • Dusky Lorikeet/Prehensile-Tailed Porcupine - NEW Zoo
  • Lake Tanganyika Fish/Pig-Nosed River Turtle - Milwaukee County Zoo

Some other ideas:
Unexpected Animals in Aquariums
Goeldi's Monkey - Shedd Aquarium
Bullet Ant - Shedd Aquarium

Zoo Oddities
  • Special Memories Zoo has a railroad museum
  • Animal Gardens Petting Zoo has a trapeze act

Exhibit Transformations
If you wait until next year, you may be able to include Milwaukee's new elephant exhibit.

Walk-Throughs
You should probably include at least one Australian Walkabout. Minnesota's is pretty nice.

I have no good suggestions but quite excited for all these new video!(And of course more excited the rewards!)

10 Rare Animals in U.S. Zoos & Where to Find Them (Ten animals that are somewhat well-known to the public (and some that need to be) but are only found in one or two zoos in the country. The list is completed)
For this one you should wait until San Diego gets the platypuses then use that.

  • Top 10 Best Aged Zoo Exhibits (Exhibits which opened at least 25 years ago but still hold up)
  • Top 10 Best Exhibit Themes (Exhibits with high amounts of theming and immersion for both visitors and animals)

Another one for weird mixed exhibits:

Kelp Bass/Garibaldi/Leopard Shark/California Moray/Half Moon/California Sheephead/Striped Surfperch/Humboldt Penguin - Brookfield Zoo

Reptile houses or even a generalized all-indoor exhibit countdown would be good to see. And maybe most interesting hoofstock exhibits in the US? Don't know how much there'd be to work with though and not everyone is as into hoofstock as I am, but it'd be a good way to show how they can really shine when displayed in more than just plain barren paddocks.

Excited to see all of the ones you're considering!
