Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo news 2018

Took a trip to the zoo today. They didn't take any time removing the signage for the elephants.
Besides the news of the elephants moving. One thing I've noticed is that the waterbuck signage has been removed from African waterhole area. I am not sure if the signage is being replaced or if the waterbucks have been moved, but I haven't seen the waterbucks in awhile. Anyone know of anything?

That exhibit being empty is one of the most beautiful sights ever. Adventure Africa is going to be manna from heaven for old Brittany and Ruth. Even if it is designed in a more functional manner. If animal welfare is their top priority, Brittany and Ruth are in for a blissful rest of their life.

I am not sure if anyone has read some of the comments on the zoos facebook page, some of them have been interesting. Many are excited to see the elephants move into their new home. Some even know about the AZA guidelines on elephant care. One even pointed out that zoo needs to have at least 3 elephants in order to be in line with the AZA guidelines. Those have been mostly all positive, however there is those nay sayers that are recommending the zoo stop the elephant program and move them into a sanctuary. One even used the IDAUSA as why Milwaukee should end the program. I think although most of the comments are positive, the fact that some of them are calling for the end of the elephant program and that the elephants should be sent to a sanctuary, means that the zoo needs to be proactive on trying to get a head of the messaging.

With the addition of male greater kudu, it got me thinking, what’s all going on with the waterhole exhibit? The exhibit going down two species and with construction going on for the hippos that will possibly force people to walk around the waterhole exhibit this upcoming summer, I feel like the zoo may want to beef of the exhibit. Could be nice to see some possible new animals.

This might be a bit down the road, but I think one of the old mock rock exhibits - either the watering hole or the former Dall Sheep - could be renovated a kopje species such as Rock Hyrax or Klipspringer. Possibly even Caracal or a new exhibit for Amos the Serval.

Is this confirmed or wishful thinking?

Been wondering this myself as they are finishing the outside of phase 1 adventure Africa. That seems like it would be a waste of space and a bit of an eye sore for their new land they are opening up.

I've been waiting far too long to say this, but after todays visit the elephant exhibit is essentially complete. Shade structures, fencing, the pool, the barn, the off exhibit yards, the demo yard and the feeder walls are all done. Landscaping is complete with only grass and some plants needing to grow in. Everything is essentially done and the Impala Plains exhibit is almost complete as well with only some irrigation and fencing needing to go into place. I will be posting some photos shortly to see the complete yard and may I say in particular that the pool area looks really quite good. I also have a few overview shots from the skyride I will post later this evening.

Has anyone heard what may be going on with the old indoor elephant exhibit? I was under the impression that it was going to be vacant since they’ll be starting construction on the hippo exhibit soon but walking by today I see they have a mess up between the bars? Could it be expansion for the hippos temporarily?

Also, noticed that they are building a paddock within the elk exhibit on the corner near the Bears. Anyone heard what may be going on there?

Interesting things are afoot...

Some quick updates. It looks like the former elephant house is becoming winter holding for some of the animals. I saw the river hogs inside the former exhibit today. I'm glad to see some of the animals that we normally don't get to see in the winter, may use the old elephant exhibits.

The fencing in the elk exhibit is the zoo trying to plant some new vegetation for the elks in the spring. However it looks like the elks have already broken through the new temporary fencing to see what the gardeners were doing.

The beach exhibit in the aviary is all boarded up. I didn't see any signs saying what was going on with that exhibit.

They started theming for Adventure Africa over near the Lake and harbor seals, watching them instal a sign.

They closed the souther gift shop for remodeling with an opening date of spring 2019.

No work/prework has started on the Hippo exhibit. I wonder when they are going to start that project?

I hope nothing bad happens to the beach! That is one of my favorite parts of the aviary (besides the free-flight portion).
