Oakland Zoo Oakland Zoo News 2018

I’m upset since he was my favorite but is for the best. Any ideas what’s going to be in the old gibbon exhibit now that Nikko is gone?

I think the zoo could start a breeding program with their gibbons now that Nikko is leaving. It would be nice for them to start having breeding programs for their animals And have them participate in the SSP.

Maybe they could use the newly available space to expand the chimpanzee exhibit? Of course they would have to move the hornbills around which sit in between the two exhibits but I think it'd be worth it. However, according to the zoo's Instagram, at the moment, "Gibbon Island will be kept temporarily vacant if it is determined that Nikko is not adjusting is not adjusting as expected at SBZ and should be brought back to Oakland Zoo."

Agreed but which species is currently being bred in AZA zoos? They already have siamangs but they are elderly brothers.

I don’t know? Maybe they could get some new sismangs and start breeding them or they could have a breeding group of cotton top tamriens and they could move into the former gibbon exhibit.

Good idea but moving the hornbills might result in them being removed from the zoo entirely as I don’t think they have enough space to make a new hornbill exhibit for 3 birds. Nikko is most likely going to stay at Santa Barbra just because I’ve seen him get along with so many other gibbons before that I am positive he’s staying over there.

That would be a VERY generous tamarin exhibit and it would be hard for anyone to see them in the exhibit (It’s already hard to see them in their smaller exhibit).
For siamangs they would have to wait till the others are
passed or moved from the zoo since there is no value in getting more. I would like to see a tamarin exhibit that offers a bit better viewing of the small mammals and a new group for breeding as well.

My best guess for what’s going to happen to the exhibit would be these following scenarios...

1.) Zoo starts preparing for a single themed region so as the elderly Asian species (gibbons, siamangs, muntjac) eventually disappear, the region becomes more South American focused with the old gibbon exhibit becomes home to spider monkeys.

2.) Zoo brings in more gibbons from other zoos (San Diego or Cincinnati most likely) and try to kickstart a new breeding group thanks to the zoo’s new mentality of breeding animals.

3.) Zoo brings in elderly gibbons or other primate species that no zoo wants.

Do u think the Sun bears will be phased out?

Does anyone have a list of SSP that are done at Oakland zoo? I’m also interested on which breeding programs the zoo can partake in currently or have shown interest in partaking so if anyone has an idea on that as well that would be nice.

I know their hornbills are part of the SSP. Along with their American bison, gray wolves, California Condors, and Jaguars. I think their giraffes also take place in the SSP and maybe some of their birds and monkeys do as well like their Hamadryas baboons and their squirrel monkeys. Agoutis and zebras are in the SSP as well if I recall. Also we’re the mountain lions spayed or neutered?

I think the mountain lions were spayed and neutered.

Not sure if anyone pointed this out but the zoo has formed a new relationship in 2018 with a zoo in Taiwan know as Hsinchu zoo. They are now both sister zoos. What this means for Oakland is beyond me but it's still interesting.

Do u think the zoo in Taiwan and Oakland zoo will trade animals someday?

Maybe later as the zoo in Taiwan is going through some renovations as of now and will reopen in July 2019 according to Wikipedia (I can't read what it says on their main site). It doesn't seem like the zoo had much to begin with. Here is a list of what they have based on pictures, maps and other sources (mammals only):

Common eland
Chinchilla
Fallow deer
Sika deer
Formosan Serow
Crab eating macaque
Brown lemur
Malayan sun bear
"Bengal" tiger
Orang-Utan
Grey gibbon
Nile Hippo

The Oakland zoo said they are working with them to provide "best standards for animal welfare, education and conservation." so its up to you what that means. My best guess is once the zoo reopens they will be working with the Asian species that the zoo has but I don't know for certain...

I wonder if the zoo in Taiwan exchange sun bears with Oakland as the zoo could start a breeding program for this species making Oakland a unique zoo and if they do so then there could be hope for sun bears here in then US as their being phased out.

Unlikely since the only zoo to breed a sun bear is San Diego and only a few zoos have bred sun bears successfully in the world. I won’t count on it being about the bears but it could be conservation education involving the bears.

The Taiwanese zoo looks almost like a roadside zoo from all the media pictures I’ve seen of them. Reviews aren’t that positive either. Oakland probably is going to be doing more in this relationship than the other zoo...

It seems for Hsinchu Zoo a window on the world. A bit fresh what it might hold for Oakland. Do they plan more of an Asian realm here (BTW: sun bears phase out species, so no chance of that)?

I’m not sure what a “window on the world” means but I definitely agree that it’s still too early to tell what the zoo will do for Oakland.

As for an Asian realm, I’m not sure which zoo you are talking about. Hsinchu zoo seems to focus more on species from the Asian continent so the whole zoo in of itself is an Asian realm zoo. As for Oakland I’m not sure, they do have Asian species but they are mostly elderly or phased out species. I’m not gonna dwell on fanatic, imaginary exhibits for an Asian realm since I’ve done that too many times but if they were to make an Asian exhibit, it would have heavy funding from Taiwan torusim and other companies. That much I know.
