Mustelids in North America

This thread has recently been discussing the surprising lack of mustelids in zoos throughout the world. I have decided to attempt to make a complete list of mustelid species kept in the US and Canada:

Only information from 2016 or newer is included. Missing holders, missing species, or information on populations or subspecies is welcome. I have decided not to include Domestic Ferrets in this thread.

The group turned out very low. The most common species are American Badger (20 holders), Asian Small-Clawed Otter (28 holders), and North American River Otter (99 holders). Animals other than otters were disappointingly low overall.

Thanks. However, keep in mind this thread is only for the US and Canada (I said that in the post).

Are you sure about Fort Wayne keeping Honey Badger and Zoo America keeping American Marten? I thought Fort Wayne's Ratel died, and I couldn't find any recent references to Zoo America's marten.

Well, my apologies then. This is in the North America - General section of the forum, so I included all of the facilities that come up when you search under “North America” in ZIMS.

As far as Fort Wayne’s ratel and ZooAmerica’s marten go, all I know is that both have individuals of their respective species in question still listed in ZIMS.

And how up to date is that?

And how up to date is that?
Theoretically, it should be updated daily, as it is a comprehensive record keeping program. I know some facilities are still weaning off of their traditional daily report programs, but major events are usually always reported in ZIMS if the facility uses the program at all. Additionally, the ratel that recently passed at Ft. Wayne was a male, while the individual still listed is a female. American martens are listed on ZooAmerica's website, and ZIMS lists them as holding 2.1.

Lupa does not have Tayra. Maritime Aquarium has NARO, Aquarium of the Pacific and SeaWorld San Diego both keep California Sea Otter. NY Aquarium used to have an Alaskan bts, though I don't know if he's still around. Does Cincinnati no longer keeper Tayra?

Also, didn't the Zorilla turn out to be a skunk?

It is my understanding that the Tayras at Cincinnati were replaced with genets.

The Zorilla turned out to be a Zorilla.

Cincinnati has always had genets as well.

That photo of a Zorilla that was linked was 100% a different individual than the animal posted to the site. The animal posted to the site is a skunk :p

In that case Cincinnati probably still has Tayra.

Thanks for the correction. Do you think RAZ actually has a Zorilla?

So the Naples Zoo (Naples, Florida) no longer has its honey badgers?
They do. I was unaware they had them when I typed that list.
No idea, I know nothing about the place. It seems they must have at some point but I think the fact that they have a skunk signed as one now suggests they don't keep them anymore.

~Thylo
I'll include them on the list until I see a reason not too.
