As the title suggest, what animals have you seen that you think few people on this on website have scene?

As for myself...
Two animals I've seen that I'm pretty sure only a handful of Zoochatters have seen:
  1. Flapjack octopus (Opisthoteuthis sp.) (Monterey Bay Aquarium - no longer on display)
  2. Great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) (Monterey Bay Aquarium - no longer on display)
Animals I've seen that I think not many Zoochatters have seen (but probably more than "a handful"):
  1. Bald uakari (Cacajao calvus) (L.A. zoo)
  2. Bornean pygmy elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) (Oregon Zoo)
  3. Emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) (SeaWorld San Diego)
  4. Giant garter snake (Thamnophis gigas) (Sacramento zoo)
  5. Hawaiian hawk (Buteo solitarius) (Honolulu zoo)
  6. Hawaiian monk seal (Monachus schauinslandi) (Waikiki aquarium)
  7. Island fox (Urocyon littoralis) (Santa Barbra zoo)
  8. San Francisco garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia) (Sacramento reptile show - no longer on display)
I probably could add a couple more species but I don't feel like taking forever to write this list

(Also sorry if this thread already exists)

While Margay are uncommon, I'm not sure they're extremely rare.

As for some I've seen...

1. Red Uakari at the Los Angeles Zoo
2. Dugong at the Sydney Aquarium
3. African White-Bellied Pangolin at the Brookfield Zoo (not sure if this is extremely rare, but still very uncommon)
4. Mountain Tapir at the Los Angeles Zoo
5. Puerto Rican Parrot at the Lincoln Park Zoo

I'd personally argue the majority of Zoochatters have probably seen this species; I myself have seen it at a total of eight collections.

Out of interest, what were the 8 collections you saw Margay in? I myself have never seen one but I'd assumed that they were at least somewhat common.

I'm assuming you are talking about...in captivity
I'm also assuming a fair number of posters have seen the rares at San Diego
(zoo, safari park and seaworld) and LA

so I'm go with some I think are fairly unusual though not necessarily rare
tuatara - St Louis
ozark blind cave fish- St Louis
cave salamander -St Louis (not all that rare but haven't seen them anywhere else)
green,yellowbelly,broadbanded,diamond back and northern watersnakes -St Louis (same deal not that rare but I haven't seen them elsewhere that I can recall and they were never labeled when on display at St Louis)
baikal seal -St Louis
acorn woodpecker -Palm desert
Devil's hole pupfish - Shark Reef
Pahrump killifish -in aquaria at Corn Creek outside Las Vegas
Bahamian hutia - Ardastra Gardens

Personally, I've seen, not "scene" some good ones.

Sumatran Rhino (Cincinnati Zoo, just the rear end, but it counts)
Aardwolf (Cincinnati Zoo)
Razo Island Skink (Cincinnati Zoo)
Blue Lobster (Shedd Aquarium)
Shark Ray (Newport Aquarium, I'm sure more have seen them)
 
Hirola - Dvur Kralove
Jacksons Hartebeest - Dvur Kralove
Black Wallaroo - Territory Wildlife Park
Numbat - Perth Zoo
Mala - Alice Springs Desert Park
Burrowing Bettong - Alice Springs Desert Park
Eastern Pygmy Possum - Trowunna Wildlife Park
White-necked Picathartes - Frankfurt Zoo
St.Vincent Amazon - Loro Parque ( La Vera)
 
I don't think there is a time limit on editing.
I've actually seen Sumatran rhinos at LA and Cinn
 
Yellow-billed Magpie is my best one I expect.

I have also seen Sac Zoo's Giant Garter Snake.
I really don't know on Emperor Penguin, I know only SeaWorld San Diego has them in NA, but a good number of asian collections have them.

Other possibilities for me here might be Long-tailed Weasel, Harp Seal, and the Newfoundland subspecies of American Marten.

12.Crab eating mongoose(Taipei)
 
Trying to think of some which probably few other Zoochatters have seen.

Great Spotted Kiwi and Okarito Brown Kiwi
Takahe
Kakapo
(Obviously lots of other NZ endemics too, and also various Fijian and New Caledonian endemics like Orange Dove, Uvea Horned Parakeet, etc)

Cat Ba Langur
Delacour's Langur
Shortridge's Langur
(etc etc for rare Asian primates)

Pigmy Hog

Grey-necked Picathartes
Helmeted Hornbill

I know quite a few members have seen Long-beaked Echidna and Dugong, but they're still rare enough to mention I guess.


(Edit: those are all captive animals as I assumed that was the intent of the thread)

Given that the species was until recently kept in Tierpark Berlin (which quite a lot of zoochatters have visited), as well as still being present in Hamerton I would expect quite a number of European zoochatters to have seen it.

A similar situation happens with other extreme rarities in zoos that are often the destination of travelling zoochatters. The trumpet manucode in Zoo Berlin, Baby the river dolphin in Duisburg and a seemingly endless list of birds in Walsrode come to mind.

For myself, maybe Spix' macaw or Bulwer's pheasant in Pairi Daiza? I don't know how many zoochatters have travelled to that part of Belgium since they were put on display.

Do wild animals count? I don't think a lot of zoochatters have seen Coues' arctic redpoll (Acanthis hornemanni exilipes), with the exception of the occasional birder (looking at you @Vision!).
 
Travelling around the UK and western Europe a bit in the early 1970s gave me the chance to see some creatures that would make most ZooChatters envious - I have put photos of some of them in the Gallery. They include:-
  • African golden cat at Amsterdam
  • Jamaican streamertail hummingbird, resplendent quetzal at Birdland, Bourton-on-the-Water
  • bald (white) uakari, mountain gorilla, white-nosed saki at Cologne
  • banded linsang, grey-necked Picathartes, Hispaniolan solenodon, zebra duiker at Frankfurt
  • small-eared dog at Jardin des Plantes
  • angwantibo, giant armadillo, striped possum, tree shrews (greater, lesser & Indian) at Regent's Park,
  • flat-headed cat, magnificent bird of paradise at Rotterdam

I like that list - I have only seen six of them, which is less than a third...
