3 LITTLE QUESTIONS TO ANSWER ON YOUR 2018

1. PERSONAL ZOO VISIT HIGHLIGHT

2. FAVOURITE PIECE OF ZOO NEWS

3. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
1/ Seeing a really active Binturong at Cotswold
2/ Need to think a bit more....
3/ Only visiting two zoos this year, my worst record ever.
Not see an elephant this year, which is worrying -- I've always worried I would stop believing in them if I went a year without seeing one!

Need to do better next year.

1) Finally seeing the Coquerel's sifaka at the Sacramento Zoo (I've been visiting since I was young but I've never seen it until this year) / 2) Okapis are coming to my local zoo! (Sacramento Zoo) / 3) The honey badgers (a species I've never seen) being off exhibit when I visited San Diego zoo / Goals for 2018) Visit at least 2 new zoos, See at least 10 noteable species I've never seem before, see a lot of cute babies, and start volunteering at a zoo

This isn't easy, am I allowed more than 1 for each category ?

1 Easily my trip to Duisburg in July. Not just for the obvious reason, but also my first tasmanian devil, Wombat & bottlenose dolphin in at least 2 decades!

2. Polar Bear cub at Highland Wildlife Park
Sun Bear cub at Chester
Almost any news from Hamerton!

3. The closure of London Zoo aquarium
The ongoing problems at Paignton
The news that the elephants have left Twycross and now won't be joined by a bull for a considerable time, making the move and excuse for leaving pointless
The death of gorilla Baby Doll at Howletts
Worst of all the death of Rajang at Colchester!

1. My personal zoo visiting highlight was attending ZooHistorica in Antwerp Zoo in September. ZooHistorica is always an excellent event that provides a great opportunity to meet up with other zoo enthusiasts. Antwerp has always been one of my favourite zoos and with visits to Planckendael and Pairi Daiza too it was a thoroughly enjoyable trip.

2. My favourite zoo news must be the exciting new species Hamerton acquired this year; this zoo’s collection just keeps improving.

3. My biggest disappointment was the official announcement that London Zoo’s aquarium would be permanently closing next year.

1. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary’s bird collection (especially due to Chiming Wedgebill- a bird with an incredible call).
2. The continual growth and development of my local zoos (Darling Downs Zoo and Wildlife HQ), adding new species to my state including Red-handed Tamarin, Pygmy Hippo, Maned Wolf, Fennec Fox and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur. All these species in just one year.;)
3. The death of Australia’s last flamingo.

1. 2 visits to the well-know St. Louis Zoo
2. Following the Adventure Africa construction at Milwaukee Zoo.
3. I've never even been to Chester, but I was still devastated when I heard about the fire.

Which zoo are you looking to volunteer at? I’m guessing Sacremento.

1)My personal zoo visit highlight was visiting the Australia zoo for the first time. I was ultimately awed by their collection of amazing native and exotic creatures. I especially enjoyed seeing the Crocodile show!

2) My favourite peice of the zoo news would have to be Milli the female Sun bear at Chester zoo giving birth to the first sun bear cub ever to be born in the UK!

3) My biggest disappointment of the year would’ve had to have been Tukta, a 7 year old female Asian elephant dieing after contracting EEHV.

1. Possibly finally meeting 'Baby', the Orinoco river dolphin in Duisburg? Also first visits to some zoos which really surprised me. Pairi Daiza at the top of that list, but I also found Wuppertal & Highland Wildlife Park more impressive than expected, Longleat was stunning and Cologne was a wonder of the zoo world.
2. New rare acquisitions, with continuing announcements. Hamerton and Pairi Daiza top the list.
3. Chester's fire. A horrendous event. I had briefly visited Monsoon forest (for the second time ever) as the zoo was closing 4 days before. I dashed through in an attempt to get to spot the herps, barbet and bulbul on the way to the green magpies but with very little luck, and a misted camera lens. So I planned to visit the following week...

Odd you had so much trouble seeing the Coquerel's, I've seen them almost every time I've gone over the years.

Agreed on 2 and 3, looking forward to having Okapi so close! And I too missed the Honey Badgers at SD, even if that was just barely 2017...

1. Seeing the chimps enjoy their new exhibit at Twycross.
2. Sun bear cub at Chester.
3. Not being able to visit more zoo's further afield (such as Chester, Bristol, Yorkshire) as planned.
Chester zoo fire.
Not getting to see Monsoon Forest before the fire.
Snow leopard enclosure door being left open at Dudley resulting in the male escaping and leaving them with no option but to shoot it.
The continuing TB at Paignton.

1. So many! Some great moments were finally seeing the famous Bronx Zoo properly and re-visiting the great Shedd Aquarium, but my favourite moment has to be seeing my first Pangolin! Truly an incredible animal.

2. Pygmy Hippo babies as well as White and Indian Rhino babies were both great, as well as some great news about the renovation of San Diego’s Children’s Zoo.

3. No personal disappointments but the Chester Zoo fire was terrible.

1. Visiting the zoos of Ohio this past summer was fantastic: great zoos in a great state with great people. I loved it! In Europe, like @Tim May I thoroughly enjoyed ZooHistorica in Antwerp.

2. In the UK, definitely Hamerton’s expanding collection: having a zoo run by people who are interested in keeping unusual species is a wonderful thing.

3. It seems to have been a poor year for London Zoo. The fire at the end of 2017 started things off badly. The announced closure of the aquarium is an enormous shame. And seeing even the Reptile House slipping is very worrying.

1. An incredible visit to San Diego during the first week of the year seeing four zoological institutions and some beautiful sights outside of zoos. One of the best trips I have ever taken in my life.

2. The imitate arrival of platypus at San Diego zoo Safari Park likely next year.

3. The death of Lilly the Asian elephant calf at Oregon zoo.
EDIT: I also just learned about the Monsoon Forest fire for the first time. Absolutely horrific piece of news.

1. Probably seeing a lion that wasn't asleep and was actually moving at the Reid Park Zoo.
2. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park sending a captive-born black rhino to Tanzania as part of a reintroduction effort.
3. The lack of polar bear reproduction in American zoos. I seriously think the AZA should consider putting them on the phase out list, considering how poorly the population is doing.

1. Seeing my first Nene, and other firsts at the Louisville Zoo.

2. Hearing about Cincinnati's new master plan.

3. Wildlife Canyon's demolishment at Cincinnati Zoo.

1. PERSONAL ZOO VISIT HIGHLIGHT

2. FAVOURITE PIECE OF ZOO NEWS

3. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
1. Actually being able to see the tamandua at the Buffalo Zoo.
2. The multiple pachyderm births within the Toronto Zoo (Indian rhino and pygmy hippo).
3. The lack of zoos visited this year (6, record low for recent years) and the Chester Zoo fire.
