To My Fellow High Schoolers, Are You All As Happy As Me Midterms Are Over

Maybe it's only New Zealand that does it the obvious way and has an actual school year (running from February to December). It seems bizarre to me to split a school year across two years.
Some American schools (but not most) do it that way too

May/June then. College/university usually ends in May, I didn't realize public schools did.

I think it's more common for schools on the East and West Coasts to end public school in June and start again in September, while in the middle of the country August to May is the usual schedule. Additionally, exams for me were in December and the new semester started in January.

Having exams in January seems odd to me, because then does your winter break not coincide with Christmas and New Year's?

It's kind of funny how this system is bizzare for some of you guys but for me it's completely normal as it's all I've ever known

Winter break coincides with Christmas and New Year's and then finals are a while after we get back. Then you have basically a long weekend and the new semester starts.

I agree it’s bizarre.
Australia’s school year goes from late January/early February to December.

This will be due to the fact that your winters are our summers. The school year takes place when it does so that children will have the end of spring and most of summer free. I assume it's the same reasoning for you, it's just for us winter closes out and then opens up the year.

Oh yeah, I guess that makes sense. I didn't think of that. Why don't you lobby Congress to change when winter is?
