Zoo Duisburg Duisburg Zoo news

And I believe not all that common either in general in zoos that keep vicunas.

Does anyone know the species of the fish that live with the giant salamanders? Fish identification is not my strongest suit, and there were no signs at that particular tank (except for the sign for the salamander itself) when I visited.

I vaguely remember them, but I think they're Leuciscus cephalus. I only saw them, but not the salamander.

These may have been in there too now that you mention it, but the fish I was thinking of looked a bit more like barbs and had side-stripes.

Heh, luck is an utterly random thing sometimes - I saw the salamander being very active, but I didn't see the red-handed tamarins in the adjacent Rio Negro although they are usually very visible from what I know...

A new elephant house and ape house are planned for the zoo.

Zoo Duisburg will neues Affenhaus und Elefantengehege bauen

I was thinking about this today. Frankly it's sort of hard to imagine a new Duisburg Elephant House being any good. I think it's reasonable to question if they have the space or financial resources to make it a success. If they do manage to find enough space what will they have to sacrifice in order to do so? Probably the best to hope for would be a Basel-style enclosure in a total reworking of the northern part of the zoo beyond the Afrikanum. Whatever happens, barring a disappointing effort confined to the footprint of the current enclosure, it will be a major shake up to the zoo, probably bigger than the replacement of the Aequatorium.

Maybe the thread needs "non-river dolphin news" adding to it's title with the understanding that if* the sad day comes a separate thread announces the death?:D We can then read Duisburg news without the sinking feeling in our stomachs.

*I still half-believe it's immortal

I like that idea! :p

First: Sorry for giving you guys the "oh no, there's a notification from the Duisburg thread" startle. :P

Second: The zoo's website mention that they're building a new exhibit in the aquarium for a new and "interesting" saltwater species that they won't reveal yet. The exhibit is apparently located in the middle of the hallway and is circular. Does anyone here have any clues?

I wish I could say I didn't think it, but I did think it... :D
