Update on the Koalas

Overall the koalas and wombats have settled incredibly well to their new home at Longleat. However, it is with regret to announce that one of the koalas, Wilpena, recently became ill with a serious kidney disease called Oxalate nephrosis. As a result it's been faced with no alternative but to put Wilpena to sleep. although it is the first time there are Southern Koalas in Europe but it's a sad time

Just for the record, the Koalas in Zurich which were imported last year are also Southern koala.

it's been 3 days now since one of the koalas Wilpena has been put to sleep since becoming ill with a serious kidney disease called Oxalate nephrosis.

Longleat will be opening a new exhibit with two new species for the park. Looking at the photos provided as "clues", they appear to be Giant otters and a crocodile or sorts...?? Take a look on their Facebook to see!

Giant otters would make a fantastic edition to Longleat's already fast-growing animal collection. I hope they do get them!

Both more than likely to be replacing the Penguins.

A fanciful thought, but wouldn’t the otters be better suited for the lake if sensibly separated from the sea lions and hippo? I’d imagine they’d make quite an exhibit if viewed from the boat!

I love that idea - I just think that practically, it would be difficult to make them easily viewable and contained.

Does anyone know the long term plan for hippos at the park? Will there be an upgrade in facilities or increase in stock considering the age of the current pair?
