Horrible, horrible news!!!
The municipal government, in all its infinite wisdom, has started to impose the "animalist" (AKA: Vegan cry-babies) Zoo XXI model on the zoo, which wants to reduce the number of species from over 300 to... 11... BLOODY 11!!! All because of a group of people who don't know about animals, don't accept what they are, and therefore DON'T LOVE THEM.
These are very dark times... My only hope is that the WAZA and EAZA take wind of this and step in to protect the zoo. It's our only hope...

Who knows... I mean, it's possible it could be reversed if these idiots get ousted from the mayor's office and, therefore, the zoo itself. I think what's needed is a change in political leadership and the intervention of the EAZA against this travesty.
 
It seems that the Barcelona anti zoo group want to follów the model of the Buenos Aires zoo clousure and transformation, which is now considered a disaster of an experience. Perhaps international pressure can help stop this attack against a great institution. Politicians are senstive to international pressure.

I'm going to send an email to the EAZA very soon. I'm getting my friends, my family, the zookeepers themse and an anti-vegan Facebook group to re-send it once it's complete. I hope that with this iniciative, and perhaps more people joining in, we can get them to intervene.

that's all they need with the anti Wuppertal crowd and the "save the british monkey" campaign ... referring to a Bonobo who's integration isn't going like a disney plot. WAMS are encouraging people to pester everyone related to animal welfare about this and appear to have oly just heard about EAZA

Then, if WAMS can help, it would be wise to send them this message too. I will soon post the message on this board; I want to send it, along with all my allies, tomorrow. Hopefully, tomorrow will be the day we save Barcelona Zoo.
 
sorry @JigerofLemuria but you have misunderstood my post. WAMS are currently campaigning for the transfer of a single bonobo to themselves, were it would not have company. It is also showing support for the closure of all zoos.

My goodness! Well, thank god I haven't sent anything yet. Thank you for clearing that out. Yes, hopefully a pressure group can be made against these zealots and they can be stopped! Or at least their influence will be.
 
@JigerofLemuria, emailing EAZA may be one approach, but what about writing (petition?) to the Mayor of Barcelona?
Also, what do the zoo staff themselves want supporters to do? Do they have any sort of plan or proposal?
I ask these things because I think it's important that, as a zoo-supporting community, we act in a unified manner. We can all moan about how awful this is, but we need to know what we can all do.

Of course, I want us to be a strong, United push for the zoo's survival.
Unfortunately, the mayor and her associates have shown again and again that they don't want to listen to reason, they're full-fledged zoo-hating bumdiots. The zoo's staff, who have debated with her and her cronies, have found a brick wall every single time.
I've informed some of the zookeepers of my initiative, and hopefully they will jump on board. The EAZA has valuable animals in the Barcelona Zoo, and surely they will realize that losing them, or having them in orbit, will be an absolute disaster.
 
I did all what I can do, that is re-send this fatal new to all my nature-concerned contacts, including a zoo curator.

Thank you so much, Kakapo. This gesture is really helpful; the more people we can have on the side of the zoo, the more hope it has of surviving. :)
 
The 2019 Barcelona City Council election is scheduled for Sunday, 26 May 2019. All 41 seats in the City Council will be up for election. Is a campaign to gather support for the zoo amongst candidates for Council seats a viable option?
