New Life: Rescued tiger to leave Gladys Porter Zoo

http://myemail.constantcontact.com/...Sync-.html?soid=1101287526129&aid=CLL3HJ9722Y

Rescued baby tiger is being sent to a sanctuary in north Texas. They have another tiger cub his age so he'll have a playmate.

Side note, I'm looking at the website for the sanctuary he's going to and they have so many animals. Lots of big cat sanctuaries do, really. Really hits you in the face how big of an issue it is. Yeah, the animals at this place got rescued, but it makes you think, there's gotta be many more animals like this still in bad conditions. It's sad, it's pretty hard to imagine big exotic animals getting abused like this but it happens.

You can all do something about that as whereas AZA / ZAA zoos have an accreditation policy, these roadside and private zoos may / might be unlicensed and all these facilities do - and would IMO - require a licensing system to separate the chaff from the corn.

BTW: again I must admit I do not see much ado about GPZ in Brownsville on here. I cannot imagine there is nothing noteworthy to report on this zoo with some reputation (in herps, rare hoofstock et cetera) other than a rescued roadside tiger ... (not diminishing that a rescue was out of place ... no, just I would like to see some news on comings and goings at this place)!

A recent development is the new Neotropical exhibit Tropical Americas & El Mundo Huasteco Totonaco featuring tufted capuchin monkeys and capybara.

This goes with the promise that in future extension the Neotropical area with exhibits for other South American animal species including tapir (I guess ... Baird's ...), river otters, leaf-cutter ants and jaguar.

I follow GPZ on social media (it's the zoo I went to a lot as a kid) so I'll make it a point to post more about them here. They do quite a bit and I'm also surprised it doesn't get posted about much here, must be the location, not a lot of Valley folk here. I recently moved further south so I'm a few hours away from Brownsville now, I plan on visiting GPZ sometime soon anyway. Since this zoo doesn't get a lot of attention, maybe I'll even post my first zoo review.

I'm gonna make a trip to GPZ when it warms up a little. Is there anything in particular you guys want me to look at or take pictures of?

Potoroo, Howler, Brocket, Bushbuck, and birds.

The new Tropical Americas/El Mundo Huasteco exhibit, please! :)

I'll be sure to keep these in mind! I'd like to go sometime this month but I'll see how my scheduling works out. Otherwise, it will be April at the latest. Zoo is two and a half hours away so I might just make it a day trip instead of overnight, that will save me money and I'll be able to go earlier.

Could you see if there are any sharks in the Russell Aquatic Ecology Center?

On that note, I've always wondered what exactly was in the Aquatic Ecology Center. Is it a reptile house? Is it an aquarium? Any report you have on what it is will be appreciated.

Judging from the zoo's website, it seems to be a straightforward aquarium.

It's a small aquarium, yes. They have a rather sizeable reptile house with a pretty great collection nextdoor.

There were not sharks in January 2018.

I would imagine this is due to how insanely out of the way this zoo. Brownsville is over four hours away from the nearest major city with a major zoo (San Antonio). The city literally sits on the southernmost border of the US, and it's a major detour for anyone wanting to see the zoo. The addition of the zoo to my January 2018 roadtrip required a couple of days due to travel time alone.

Howler, Brocket, Bushbuck

They should have 1.0 Guatemalan Howler mixed with 0.1 Black, 2.0 red brocket, and 6.3 bushbuck with a birth having occurred not too long ago.

Same species of brocket as Bergen County Zoo's? Do they still have plain chachalacha?
