Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2019

Keeper mentioned the rumour at the zoo is that the Sun Bear's will move into the current Giant Panda enclosure when the Panda's have moved to their new enclosure

Interesting that Sun Bears are considered suitable for an enclosure deemed too noisy for Pandas. Maybe the Sun Bears are "nails" and/or the Pandas are just namby-pambies. :D

Far too small for Bongo.

No its not, decent size for a pair or trio and young.
its a good sized enclosure and decent housing too, which would need altered for larger hoofstock, which is probably why the RRHs are going in.
With a bit of imagination and elan, how about a new home for the pygmy hipposo_O

I've never seen Bongo kept in anything that small. Plus where would they build indoor housing ?

What it would have been great for would be something like Honey Badgers, as that walkway would be great to look down on them. At Howletts you have to be rather lucky to see them due to the lack of viewing areas but something like the old Dogs exhibit at Edinburgh would be perfect.

I'd wholeheartedly agree (that I'd like to see more zoos display Ratels) but I think sourcing them is difficult (you're largely looking at exports from South Africa).

I remember seeing a ratel in the old cat exhibits back in 2008 I think next to the tigers before they were closed off. Ratels would be a species worth visiting if they had them again.

I've never actually had trouble seeing them at Howletts :P but completely failed to see the species when it was at Edinburgh.

Yes; the last individual left in 2010, and is now the breeding male at Howletts.

Visited today, couple of points to note:

  • The outside enclosure fencing looks complete at the new Giant Panda enclosure, they are going to have access to a huge outside area, their indoor accommodation is close to being completed also.
  • The female Western Grey Kangaroo has a joey in her pouch.
  • There is a baby White-faced Saki Monkey.
  • The enclosure between the Sun Bears and the Dwarf Mongoose, previously Margay, then Scottish Wildcat, is empty again.

Any pictures of the Panda exhibit?
