Newquay Zoo Newquay Zoo News

A female lowland nyala has been born at Newquay. More information is included in the link below:

Exciting new arrival - baby nyala calf | Newquay Zoo
Saw this today, on my first visit in just over two years. Other highlights were a quite small baby Slender Loris clinging to mother, nice brood of four Black-necked cygnets with very protective parents, magnificent Javan Green Magpies in perfect plumage, and the Gems of the Jungle walkthrough aviary showing nicely maturing plants. Delightful breeding group of at least eight Cuban Finches in the Tropical House, with breeding Blue-headed and Brazilian Tanagers among others. The single Hoffmann's Sloth now has a mate, only ones in the UK I believe. Just realised I missed the back room of the Tropical House so didn't see all those lovely inverts and herps in their landscaped enclosures. Oh well, just have to go back....

Newquay has released an article about their efforts to continue breeding the Owston's civet.

Some things of interest within the article - as well as Newquay only two other UK collections (Shaldon Wildlife Trust and Port Lympne) are mentioned as holding them. Also, I assume the studbook mentioned in the article is a global one, as the EAZA studbook was removed from the list last year.

The article in question is included below:

Any mention if Shaldon's have had any offspring recently ? In December I done a KFAD there and they were hopeful that the female was pregnant. I don't know what the gestation period is with a civet but I would have thought if they had been successful in getting the female pregnant she should be nearly due or had young by now.

Oh don't start them off fighting again, like in the Thrigby thread :D

Don’t worry, all has been said that needed to be said haha

@DesertRhino150, as far as my contacts are concerned for the European population, the population currently stands as:

Lyon - 0.1
Thrigby - 0.1
Shaldon - 1.1
Port Lympne - 1.1
Newquay - 2.3

This would of course be amazing news if it does happen, given that Newquay is the only zoo in the UK thus far to breed them successfully afaik! :)

Great white pelicans have returned to Newquay Zoo after a period of absence; the number that have arrived is not given. They are seemingly on-show, but are still settling in to their new home.
I was at Newquay for a quick visit yesterday and I saw 2 pelicans (but there may have been more in the pen behind the lake). I must admit that I didn't realise that they were new arrivals.

Baby crowned lemur announced on facebook.
1st visit for me today and I was quite impressed. The lionesses were very playful in the afternoon, giving the impression they'd been watching the women's football. Nice to see the bokyboky in daylight, although I'm not sure if my photos will come out well.

Good news - well done the Newquay team. Wonder if this is a species we may see at Paignton?
