ZooChat Challenge (Global) 2019

First zoo-visit of the year and here a nice selection of amphibians.
Jan. 7 : Dierenpark De Oliemeulen - the Netherlands :

View attachment 380289

2 - Painted dart frog - Dendrobates tinctorius ( 2 different forms )
View attachment 380290

3 - Dendrobates leucomelas - Yellow-headed dart frog
View attachment 380291

View attachment 380292

5 - Golden dart frog - Dendrobates auratus ( 3 different forms / subspecies )
View attachment 380293

View attachment 380294

View attachment 380295

8 - Three-toed amphiuma - Amphiuma tridactylum
View attachment 380296

2 species which are ( were ) kept on earlier visits, not seen this time :
- Three-striped dart frog ( Ameerega trivittatus ) : still signed to be kept with the Tri-colored dart frogs but couldn't find it and a keeper which I asked about the species told me that she also hadn't seen the single animal already not anymore for some time...
- Red-punckted burrowing frog ( Leptodactylus laticeps ) : the enclosure in which this species was kept previously was completly re-decorated and now is home to a group of Painted dart frogs :(.

Was the last 2 days at Rotterdam Zoo and can add some new species to the list :

9 - Colorado River toad - Incilius alvarius20190306_085753 colorado toads.jpg

10 - Mountain chicken - Leptodactylus fallax

11 - Jeberos Mimic dart frog - Ranitomeya imitator "Jeberos"
IMG_2030 Ranitomeya imaitator - Jeberos.jpg

Even better is the fact that I saw 2 lifers ( both Amphibians ! ) but they won't count for the Challenge because they both are still kept behind the scenes and the keeper asked me not to place any photos of them on Social Media untill the animals are on display.
Evenso I'm very glatt that I saw today both my first Titicaca water frogs - Telmatobius culeus and my first Lake Patzcuaro salamanders - Ambystoma dumerilii !!!

Are the frogs at the Botanical Gardens on display of behind the scenes

Iguana

11. Oriental fire-bellied toad - Bombina orientalis
12. Giant monkey frog - Phyllomedusa bicolor
13. African clawed frog - Xenopus laevis
14. Asian painted frog - Kaloula pulchra
15. Natterjack toad - Epidaiea calamita
16. Cane toad - Rhinella marina
17. Sword-tailed newt - Cynops ensicauda
18. Japanese fire-bellied newt - Cynops pyrrhogaster

Like @vogelcommando, no-shows for Ichthyosaura alpestris and Ambystoma texanum, next to Bufotes viridis.

Longleat

43. Cane toad (Rhinella marina)

Four words....I got incredibly lucky.

London Zoo

44. Common midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans)
45. Two-lined caecilian (Rhinatrema bivattatum)
46. Congo caecilian (Herpele squalostoma)

I had seen Mallorcan midwife toads in the vivarium at the back of the ‘Amphibian lab’ in the reptile house, but never the commons. Feeling like I might be on a lucky streak, I went to the caecilian window on the side of the aquarium and not only managed to spot the side of a Congo caecilian in the soil of their tank, but also a very active two-lined caecilian burrowing through the sand of its home!

The last feasible one at London - never noticed it before but they have a tank literally right behind the ones for the midwife tadpoles and brook salamanders that houses the newts!

Visited a trio of collections today, including one new one. Unfortunately I arrived at Beardsley to discover that the native herp house has been torn down completely and at Maritime Aquarium I discovered that the entire amphibian room has been converted into an exhibit for random small mammals, birds, reptiles, and common poison dart frogs...

Stamford Museum & Nature Center
60) Oriental Fire-Bellied Toad Bombina orientalis
61) Dumpy Treefrog Litoria caerulea

Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk
62) Northern Leopard Frog Lithobates pipiens

Based on my past species lists for Beardsley and Maritime, I think there were six additional species I could have picked up were it not for the closures.
