According to the zoo social media pages, their southern tamanduas MJ and Chispa recently had a baby named Abrazo.

REMEMBERING KWANINI: We're saying goodbye to a sweet old gal who lived an incredibly long life! Kwanini recently passed away from age-related issues at 29 years old, making her the second-oldest okapi in The Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Pretty amazing, huh?

Kwanini has been with us since her birth in 1990 and during that time she's given birth to 7 healthy calves. It is extremely rare to have 7 births in an okapi's lifetime, and each one of her calves taught us so much about this elusive and critically endangered species. Her care team says that Kwanini was absolutely the best mother they've ever seen. She was always loving, patient and attentive to her calves, and she was equally as gentle with her caregivers as well. She would often "groom" her keepers, especially throughout her geriatric years when she required special care.

Kwanini was a matriarch and a very important animal who helped us protect her species from extinction. She will be dearly missed. (Learn more about our long history to save beloved okapi: bit.ly/2QUxzSW)

What about spotted hyenas? The mandrills (two males, the female was sent to another zoo) will now be in Primate Place in Zoo North. The cheetahs will now be in the former mandrill habitat.

It also said on their Facebook that they sent their American alligators to the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, Illinois. In their place are now a pair of false gharials. The Bayou area will also house more endangered Asian reptiles in the future.

Having seen a hippo calf underwater at San Diego Zoo, I can testify it is one of the cutest sights in the animal kingdom. (I mean not as cute as a wild cat baby, but still...). If you are in the area make a point to see it.

If only I could make it to Dallas right now. It's kinda disheartening that none of the zoos here in Arizona have hippos right now.
