I'd always presumed the new Giant Panda enclosure was being funded by compensation for the disruption from the builders/developers (though I didn't realise it was entwined with the public sector).

The main point of interest to me in the article was the mention that they were hoping to extend the 10 years lease. I always expected that they wouldn’t be able to/interested in affording to keep them any longer.

I'd missed that, though I wonder if it might just be part of the sparring to better support and justify their monetary claim?
 
Just announced that Jambi has been PTS

We are sad to announce the loss of our Sumatran tiger Jambi.

At 16 years old, Jambi was the oldest male Sumatran tiger known to us and had been experiencing health issues related to his age. Taking into account his quality of life and wellbeing, our veterinary team advised that Jambi should be put to sleep to ensure he did not suffer.

After arriving at Edinburgh Zoo in 2015, Jambi quickly became very popular with our staff, volunteers, members and visitors. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with those who worked with him closely.

The new enclosure was the first indication to me they planned a longer stay, or another pair

They had Amur triplets in March 2003. They have never bred Sumatran's (held them since 2008)

No. It was simply that Dharma was available at the right time and was thought to be a suitable companion. They will likely receive an unrelated male at some stage in the future
 
Visited today:

  • The former Red River Hog enclosure is empty again, with a sign up advising the Visayan Warty Pigs will soon be moving into the enclosure.
  • Female Tiger Dharma can currently be seen in the older Tiger enclosure, but signs advise she will soon be moving into Tiger Tracks.
  • The new Giant Panda enclosure looks very close to being complete, I've added images into the Edinburgh gallery.
  • 2 male Lowland Nyala have been moved into African Plains, sharing the enclosure with the three female Grevy's Zebra.
  • The new Animal Antics area is nearing completion, the Southern Ground Hornbill was visable in one of the aviaries.
 
Between Visayan warty pig, Javan Banteng, Asian short-clawed otter, Taiwan beauty snake and Binturong, they could easily theme the central building into a sort of Jungle outpost.

I always liked African Plains and am not on-board with the new panda building. I heard rumour of a new species for it about 9 months ago.

I think there was talk of giraffe but unsure or as to what species sorry.
 
I know giraffes are a hard plan. I've seen enclosure designs and have spoken to keepers about it. But African plains is just wasted space now without breeding animals and a huge chunk taken out. Edinburgh has many questionable decisions and wasted enclosures and this is one incident that falls into both categories.

I think the area at the very top around the zebra house is still free for development
 
Money probably

Few notes/opinions from today:

- New white-faced saki monkey baby. Looks like a male
- Brilliant Birds feels very empty and quiet
- Red-bellied lemur and Ring-tailed lemur seem to be in together full time
- Binturong in old margay enclosure
- Was talking to a hoofstock keeper. She said that they are looking to bring in a female musk deer and are thinking of new animals for African plains now that they've lost a huge portion of the enclosure
- Noticed that the signs for yellow-bellied capuchin had them noted as a subspecies.
