Pretty liberal use of the word 'officially'
I've been trying to find out more about this, but there is really nothing online which isn't just a regurgitated form of one article.

From what little there is, they seem to be saying that (in their opinion) it is not the same as the Corsican Wildcat (a subspecies of the European Wildcat or a form derived from feral domestics, depending on your viewpoint, and thought to have been introduced by the Romans) and that its DNA is more like an African Wildcat. They suggest it was introduced by early settlers 6500 years ago, although on what evidence I'm not clear. It also isn't clear why they consider it to be a new species other than that they think it is different from the Corsican Wildcat.

In summary, I think the whole story is "exaggerated".
