Visited the zoo yesterday (exactly six months since last visit) and managed to see what's new there (thank gosh for the outstanding weather).
Both mom and baby rhino were outside with the axis deer. The two species didn't mind each other's presence.
For once, the giraffes were actually in their outdoor enclosure. It was neat seeing them use the enclosure for the first time in a while for me.
I was extremely lucky to see the sand cats being active. At the time I passed by their enclosure, they were being trained and had mice as a reward item, so it was interesting to watch how they eat.
Apparently, they have a North American porcupine as an animal ambassador. During yesterday's visit, the porcupine was brought out for a keeper talk and I just so happened to be in the area (I also originally misidentified it as a monkey when it was still in the carrier).
They did a really good job in refurbishing the reptile and amphibian house. I think it has now become one of my favourite houses of this sort in the USA (behind at least Atlanta and San Diego; I unfortunately didn't see Bronx's reptile house when I visited there).
Lastly, the most important news. There is a sea lion pup on exhibit with what I assume are its parents. It's good knowing that the zoo has successfully bred another species.
Pictures to come a bit later.
