New gharial breeding programme

On 12th and 13th August, a female gharial called Padma and a male called Gorai were transferred between Rajshahi and Dhaka Zoos, both in Bangladesh. Prior to this exchange, Rajshahi had only held female gharials and Dhaka only males. The hope is for the gharials at both zoos to begin mating by the end of this year and be producing offspring by mid-2018.

Recently suitable habitat for gharial has been located in Bangladesh, so a successful captive-breeding programme will allow the possibility of a reintroduction programme.

First 2 eggs found from the Gharial-pair but due to floodings of the enclosure both were rotten. It is however hoped they will try again to breed :

They require a sand bar nesting base for eggs to be deposited fine. Rumors have it they might modify the gharial habitat.
