America's Top 100 Zoos & Aquariums

A number of people have sent me their quiz answers over the past few days...with a score of 11 currently being the high water mark. For those that wish to tackle the quiz, just remember that you are attempting to guess the identity of 20 small-scale places that warrant only a paragraph each in the back of the zoo book. Any significant, major zoos are going to have several pages each and therefore full-length essays in the main section of the book. For example, I've had a few folks with Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum as one of the answers and I can assure you that ASDM has a full-length review and is indeed an excellent zoo. It clearly warrants a place in the Top 100.

That's been the biggest challenge for me when working on it, guessing what places made the top 100!

Question: Do you need an IZES membership to be able to purchase the book?

Not at all. I would highly recommend it as the quarterly magazine is brilliant, in full-colour and approximately 40 pages an issue...but it is expensive and so if you just want the book then it's easy enough to order only the book on the IZES website. If you become an IZES member then you do get a discount on the book and any other future orders. It's also possible to order back issues of Zoo Grapevine & International Zoo News.

There are currently 4 books for sale on the society's updated website and they are all excellent:

America's Top 100 Zoos & Aquariums

The IZES home page is promoting the American zoo book and it includes a brief glimpse of the Tulsa Zoo essay:

Apologies to all in North America for the cost of shipping....for what its worth the latest (very expensive) Zoo & Video Archive annotated interviews have been just been sent to me via Fedex from Chicago...if i had known i would have stopped them because Fedex are ridiculous. Cost? $170!!. So,by comparison our postal rates are positively benign. But we can`t help the way it is im afraid. Just had the printer onto me, the book should be here(in Yorkshire) on Thursday. Can`t wait to see it obviously. Whether the book will ever get an American print is very debatable, and at this moment looks unlikely...its a specialist item written and designed as such.

We have a new leader in the quiz competition...this individual technically guessed 14 out of the 20 zoos. Who can top that?

Ordered the book a couple days ago! That being said, I'm quite angry with @snowleopard and @Tim Brown! Up until now I haven't subscribed to IZES, but decided since I was on the website I might as well. I then decided I might as well purchase Sheridan's book on European Zoos and Tim Brown's other book on British Zoos, along with their new one! Long story short, after planning to only spend about $50 for the one book, my total came out to around $165 for all 3 books plus the membership instead. Ooops! Anyways, I hope this all came off as sarcasm and I can't wait to read all of them! Merry Christmas to me, apparently! I regret nothing!

The latest from the printer is that the book will be delivered Monday, after a lifetime of chasing suppliers/manufacturers its nothing out of the ordinary for them to be a little late. Keep the orders coming to www.izes.co.uk please...dont forget, any profit will go to conservation - most books certainly dont do that!

I'm getting one as soon as I come back from school on the weekend!
Can't wait, thank you so much for producing such a great book :)

We appreciate the kind words and you sound like me whenever I go onto Amazon looking for the latest zoo books that have been published. I end up spending way more than I anticipated!

Our Top 100 zoo book has had a lot of pre-orders at this point in time, including several Zoo Directors, and I hope that they enjoy reading about their zoos...if their facilities made the cut. Haha! :p

All of the book's images are in full-colour and each photo has been credited to the photographer and that was a painstaking yet important process in the final edit. Once I have a copy in my hands then I'll be informing all of the ZooChatters who contributed photos exactly how many of their images made the book and I know that everyone who has supplied at least one photo will want to purchase a copy or two. Who wouldn't want to buy a book with their own photos inside? It's just too bad that we couldn't have squeezed in a Platypus or two before going to print. :)

Haha! I've been on the edge of getting an IZES membership for awhile now so you just put the final nail in the coffin! Save $5 (but in reality spend $35 more!) of course!

There are still a few answers that are baffling me here! It’s a case of trying to think what the answers might be, and also trying to think which zoos might appear in the appendix. For example, that “SkyDome“ one – that might be a description of something like the Lied jungle, but I’m pretty sure that Omaha will make it into the top 100.

I’m pretty sure you’ll think it was a good choice! The magazine is tremendous: well written, and well presented. Given the price of any specialist magazine on a news stand, it’s something of a bargain.

Yes I am sure Omaha is in the main section. Remember the appendix is "specialist collections" so I don't think they will be major zoos. I think it will be reptile farms or aviaries or wildlife parks or ? I received an advance list of the 100 several months ago but I did not receive a list of the 20 specialist places, so I am curious. Based on the clues I think I may know what one is and I certainly hope I am correct because it is one of my all time favorites and IMO should have been in the main 100 list but is not.

Let me think... Big cat Rescue? :p

I think that one is Reptile Gardens.
