ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo 2019

Confirmed my suspicions as to why its been so little used ever since it was built. One modification might be to make one stall a 'dry' one to avoid some of these dangers, but maybe that is not so easy with the water flow etc. What a terrible design flaw..

Much like in the Hippo house where the drains flow upwards!

Never was the saying “the worst animal in a zoo is an architect” more appropriate to ZSL! I’d love to know how they choose their architects/designers...Pin the Tail on the Donkey Id imagine.

whoever is cheapest

I get that you believe the rhino should have a better enclosure but why would or should Whipsnade get rid of one of their main attractions?
I've never been here before but I wouldn't want to go if they got rid of the elephants. There maybe other options than just remove and replace is all I'm saying.

the elephant area was designed for elephamts which wete exercised well bywalking through the grounds. what you have now is a mud pit for a paddock, or a small sand yard. not really what the worlds most intelligent quadruped needs.....

The one thing it is missing is a swimming pool! If you go woeburn you will see how much their elephants love to swim and can submerge themselves fully in the water especially in the heat!

Driving past the Zoo I noticed new poles and posts have been placed in and around the penguin pool. Maybe netting it over to stop the seagulls?

A Black-throated Thrush (Turdus atrogularis), a species native to Asia, has been spotted over the last week hanging around the children's zoo.

Exotic Asian avian visitor spotted at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo
Visited Whipsnade today for the first time in some years. Saw the Black-throated Thrush feeding in a tree. Easy to find, it was in front of about fifty birders. Great bird, not at all bothered by its public.
Loved the aquarium, great displays, good conservation message.
Managed to miss the Gaur and Sloth Bear(s?), wondering if they still have the latter?

There was still a Sloth bear 2 weeks ago, but the Gaur were confined to the hardstanding

but does it give the elephants what they need?

Yes it does.

On a side note, I'm sorry we don't agree on anything but I'm not finding this particularly healthy so can we just leave this thread for news as it's supposed to be? Thanks.

Why don't you just say what you think it is they need and are not getting?

To say all they have is a mud pit and small sand yard is just not true. You don't have to like the facilities if that is your opinion - but at least give it a fair appraisal.
There is a fair sized pool in one of the yards
