Zoo Krefeld Fire at Krefeld Zoo

This is terrible news :( Bild is saying that 30 animals have perished

Such incredibly sad news to wake up to on the first day of a new year. This is about the worst that could happen to any zoo and a huge tragedy.

I don't think I can even imagine how heartbreaking this must be for the staff of Krefeld Zoo and the regular visitors of that zoo.

There is some media speculation that fireworks may have caused this tragedy and if that turns out to be true, that will only make me hate the stuff more than I already do.

I really, really hope the animal rights crowd isn't going to jump on this like flies on crap and use it to attack zoos as unsafe for animals, but I won't hold my breath on that one.

The people behind the Dutch Zoo Inside podcast recently gave the following updates:
- The two chimpanzees that survived with apparently minor injuries have been moved to the surviving gorilla exhibit for the time being.
- The Krefeld police stated that the remains of three Chinese lanterns were found (they have been banned since 2009).
- There was no fire warning system in the building, but it wasn't required, nor would be it easy in animal house because of dust. The fire also spread so quickly it wouldn't have made a difference.
- Apparently the material that the roof of the ape house at Krefeld was made of contributed massively to the fire being so intense and spreading and escalating so quickly. The same material was used at Cologne for the ape house and the hippo dome.

Security Check Required

This is incredibly sad news to hear.
Does anyone perhaps know which animals all lived in the primate house that are gone now?

According to the reports: Bornean orang oetans, chimpansees, flying foxes, agoutis, tamarins and birds. A non-breeding group of gorillas (the family group is kept elsewhere) was also mentioned somewhere.

This article mentions epauletted fruit bats, birds (no species mentioned) and callitrichid monkeys (species not mentioned, but a post I saw on Facebook indicated silver marmosets and lion tamarins) apart from the great apes (Bornean orangutan, chimp and gorilla). I'm not familiar with the Krefeld Zoo so I don't have further information.

This article mentions that the Kriminalpolizei (German criminal investigation police) have launched a criminal investigation for negligent or deliberate arson.

I really hope the police will be able to track down the culprits that caused this and bring them to justice. Hopefully they will also be charged with animal abuse for the horrible way they caused the animals to perish.

Last time I visited Krefeld there were the Oran utans, free-ranging bats and sevral tropical birds, aguties, marmosets, the 2 old gorillas and a group of chimps ( I may have forgotten some.... ).
The worst news to start the tear with !

On ZooTierListe I checked the recent modifications as it seems that someone already has moved most (if not all?) the species to former holdings. This told me that violet turacos, red-whiskered bulbuls and madagascar fodies are among the birds who became victim to the fire.

yes, on Zootierliste I have removed (I think all) the species that only lived in this hall. Except the chimpansees, who are still alive. And the Gorilla’s and white-faced saki because they are still in other exhibits in the zoo.
