Woburn Safari Park Woburn Safari Park 2019

The Barasingha are also in the small seperate park around Paris House- you can see them by driving in the big stone gateway off the main road and up to Paris House which is a restaurant. I've been in there several times and never seen Rusa as well, but wasn't expecting them there. Part of the area is a dense plantation you can't see into from the driveway.

I've visited Woburn many times over several decades but never seen the Rusa or Axis there- though I haven't really looked for them before. Like so many places, finding out any information there that isn't just general fluff is always difficult...
Yes, from what I recall, the keeper said the Rusa were in the plantation that you can't see into. I think we've seen the Axis down by the bison for the last few years, mostly during our June visits.
We found it quite frustrating at the deer safari that they only really wanted to show us the red deer, when we were more interested in the less common species!

Yes, perhaps because its harder work finding some of the others...in fact although they advertise to look out for the 'nine species' in the park, some will be impossible for an average visitor to see, e.g. they mention the Barasingha are seperate in the Paris house mini-park, but not how to see them...I have in fact seen them in the main park a long time ago also- but I think their number fell so low they moved them as a safety measure and they've increased a lot since then.

Thanks for the tip about the Rusa- I'll keep an eye out if I go again but now won't waste time looking for them in the big park. And I'll look out for the Axis near the Bison possibly.

Had a visit to Woburn last week - things of note from a not very frequent visitor:

- Squirrel monkeys have been removed from their previous walkthrough and this is now being developed into a new lemur enclosure. This is partially completed with one walkthrough section (B&W Ruffed, Red Bellied, Red fronted) and the indoor accomodation viewing open. A second walkthrough section intended for the Ringtails is not yet open to the public - but you can see into it easily. The squirrel monkeys are not currently on show but apparently a new enclosure is being built for them.

- The former Land of Lemurs walkthrough has been completely gutted - the walkway and foliage all removed and the fence partially removed to allow access for the landscaping equipment. I don't know if this is where the new Squirrel Monkey enclosure will be - seems likely but the signage / map just states 'under development'.

- A new (to us) farmyard / petting zoo walkthrough area has been built on the foot safari. It is fine as far as these things go - goats / ponies / donkeys / pigs and so on - but the gate closures are poorly designed and some of them defintely don't self close which could be problematic!

- We got a great view of the lion cubs who are being allowed access to their outdoor section in the mornings (something like 10:00 - 12:30 - don't hold me to that) at the moment. Mum (Zuri) very attentive. Assume they are on a time-share with the male - heard him but did not see him so cannot confirm. Other girls all out on the safari.

- Otter pups were pretty bold in exploring their enclosure but still hiding when the keepers enter for feeding time - adults were bringing them food at the back of the enclosure. Very cute!

- We saw an Ankole calf and a couple of Oryx calves on the drive through.

Oh and there are capybara in the encloure next to the tortoise / behind the red panda. I feel sure this was built for a different animal originally but cannot for the life of me remember what this was? I remember failing to see whatever they were when it first opened. Can anyone help jog my memory???

I think that was the bush dog enclosure - if I'm thinking of the right one
