Autumn this year 5 male Gorilla, the breeding male Bauwi & his four sons, will move to Hongshan Forest Park in Nanjing, China, based on EEP recommendations. A new enclosure is under construction there currently. It is not mentioned when a new male (and who) will come to Burgers' Zoo.

Vijf gorillamannetjes verhuizen naar Hongshan Forest Zoo

Reports from the Burgers thread that Nanjing will receive the zoo's male gorillas. This is a big surprise.

Out of curiosity, how many zoos keep gorillas in China? I know that gorillas as a whole aren't as common as chimps or orangs throughout Asia, but with the increase in zoos in China is there interest to get them?

I believe Zhengzhou and Jinan Zoo have them in China (at least in their history)

Basically a South American zone featuring an indoor rainforest house with some outdoor exhibits. Possible species include giant anteater, two-toed sloth, six-banded armadillo, red-backed bearded saki, white-faced saki, red howler, spider monkey, tufted capuchin, squirrel monkey, common marmoset, golden-headed lion tamarin, red-handed tamarin, cotton-top tamarin, capybara, Azara's agouti, coati, scarlet ibis, American flamingo, and toco toucan.

Ah that species list doesn't look too bad (i doubt they'll be as good as the German namesake but it certain wouldn't be too bad provided it's Nanjing)

I guess so given the tropical house in Nanjing is only 1/30 the size of Leipzig. Attached is a floorplan for anyone interested.

The Man Shepherding China’s Best Zoo Through Its Worst Year

Nice article about the zoo and it's struggle in the pandemic.

While this article is over a year old, I just read it and found it refreshing to read. I think there are perspectives and ideals shared by their director that would be brand new to some zoo leaders in Europe and the US. Good quotes too. I am looking forward to more contributions to the evolution of modern zoo practice coming out of Asia.

Unfortunately most China zoo dont be like that and stuck in the stone ages. And it is exactly this vision and believe, and more importantly, these being done in newer exhibits properly, that makes me believe Nanjing can be developed as the best zoo in China(even better than Chimelong) and more.

So Nangjin apparently showed interest in having orcas! Tihon the male from whale jail was intended to go there!

The Man Shepherding China’s Best Zoo Through Its Worst Year

Nice article about the zoo and it's struggle in the pandemic.

I have only just seen this and feel the need to add my 2 cents worth.

I met Director Shen at Nanjing in late 2017 - pre-Covid obviously.

From a zoological viewpoint this article does him justice. He is indeed a very strong, caring, knowledgeable human being and is doing wonderful things with this zoo.

However, I was disappointed to read of the toll that Covid has taken on him. The Director Shen that I know was a happy, confident man and a very gracious host. I have an enduring memory of his insisting that I try every type of tofu on the menu at dinner one night. I was doing alright until he offered stinky tofu. I have never eaten tofu since!

Shen has a detailed knowledge of the China of old. We spent an evening in the, partly recreated, old quarter of Nanjing and his knowledge of what used to be the way of life behind those massive old walls was inspiring.

I hope that he recovers his spirit very quickly - it is not only the Chinese zoo world that needs people like him.

I was just wondering is there any new info on this actually happening ? Because I have recently read somewhere on here that the zoo is planning to exhibit gorillas very soon. Does anyone have more information on this topic ?
