Just remembered I was going to reply to this - mixing gibbons with the orangs. Plans to mix gibbons from Naomi's (grey gibbon) old house were thwarted because of problems with access from the house to the island - they couldn't think of a way of stopping the orangs from using the same route. They managed to mix Naomi with the fairly tolerant Gambira by moving her into the ape house but, with the current orang situation, I wouldn't think there was room there for two gibbons as well. They'd probably find the islands a bit disappointing after being on theirs all their lives.Interesting! Thanks for the info. I recall a short editorial piece from Simon Tongue where he talked about how when the Whitley W Trust first used the Lar Gibbon as its logo/symbol and housed them on the island they were not endangered in the wild. Now of course, they are classed as endangered. So Andrew, in your opinion, do you think Paignton will attempt to introduce a new species given that they have just built a rather large (for paignton) new house at the back of the island? Perhaps then move the current two animals to Orang island and mix?
Possibly from Exmoor? To my surprise, Brazilian guinea pig have been reintroduced to the Desert house.
Or Newquay?Possibly from Exmoor?
I wasn't aware Newquay had them? If so, they would be a relatively recent addition. Exmoor had a lot last time I visited.Or Newquay?
I'm not sure how long Newquay have had them, but they were there when I visited for the first time last July.I wasn't aware Newquay had them? If so, they would be a relatively recent addition. Exmoor had a lot last time I visited.
I went earlier in the year than that. Where in the zoo were they?I'm not sure how long Newquay have had them, but they were there when I visited for the first time last July.
Yes they were in the farm areaI went earlier in the year than that. Where in the zoo were they?
I just have an idea they might have been in the Farm?
In that case they were there when I went -- I didn't really register them, as I was focussing on birds within a limited time frame.Yes they were in the farm area
Can someone please tell me what Paignton Zoo plan to do with the sibling pair of Asiatic Lions, Yali (brother) and Arya (sister),now that their dad Lucifer has passed away?.
This is one of the new specimens, which I am sure is wild-type: probably Cavia aperea.I've seen Guinea pigs in Paignton's Desert House previously but were they genuine wild-type, or just pure-breeding self-coloured Agouti of the domestic type?

The ones previously in the Desert House looked like domestic guinea pigs. Image from 2011.

Yes, from these photos the previous ones were clearly domestic- rounded head, floppy ears, gingerish colour in the agouti coat pattern and heavier body. The current wild-type ones are much more 'racy'-looking. I saw the ones at Exmoor last summer and noted the difference then also.
I had it confirmed yesterday that the plan (during the next 12 months) is to move the giraffe herd next door into the elephant paddock and move the zebra over to the current giraffe area. This will take time and money, not least to move the giraffe specific equipment. It was also confirmed a new male giraffe will arrive this year.
