Also not sure if they still exist, but I believe Melbourne University had/has a colony of laboratory opossums. (Monodelphis domestica).
Thanks for that excellent update. I have made all these changes to the lists. As we are reaching the end of 2019, over the past few weeks or so I have been emailing and messaging various zoos and wildlife parks for updates and further information on particular exotic mammals. This post combines all of these updates from various news threads, emails, messages and Facebook posts.
Unfortunately, a lot of these updates are losses (including complete species from the region) rather than gains.
Glad I could be of some assistance @Chlidonias , maintaining a list of this size often requires a collaborative effort in my opinion. Thanks for that excellent update. I have made all these changes to the lists.
*Black-capped Capuchin (Sapajus (Cebus) apella) – Altina; Banana Cabana; Crocodylus; Darling Downs; Gorge; Halls Gap; Hunter Valley; Melbourne; Mogo; National Zoo; Perth; Shoalhaven; Sydney Zoo; Tasmania Zoo; Wild Animal Encounters; Wildlife HQ; Wings Wildlife Park; Zoodoo
Following @Jambo 's post on the Melbourne Zoo news thread that their capuchin monkeys were no longer on display and potentially not at the zoo anymore, I contacted Zoos Victoria. The zoo informed me that their last capuchins (two males, Damien and Cale) moved to the new Sydney Zoo.
As I briefly mentioned on their news thread, Tasmania Zoo recently received three Golden Lion Tamarins. The trio arrived yesterday.*Golden Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) – Adelaide; Halls Gap; Melbourne; Mogo; Perth; Symbio; Wildlife HQ
Billabong Zoo has received Cotton-top Tamarins (2.0)from Perth Zoo. Apparently a female will join them at a later date.*Cottontop Tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) – Adelaide; Alexandra Park Zoo; Crocodylus; Currumbin; Darling Downs; Gorge; Halls Gap; Hartley's Crocodile Adventures; Hunter Valley; Melbourne; Mogo; National Zoo; Perth; Symbio; Taronga;Tasmania Zoo; Wild Animal Encounters; Wildlife HQ
In Australasia this species is entirely managed by a studbook system and has a number of international founders. I don't know any details about the population but there are over 100 individuals in Australian zoos.
Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park (formerly Parndana Wildlife Park) received Common Marmoset in October 2019.*Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) – Altina; Banana Cabana; Billabong; Cooberrie; Crocodylus; Darling Downs; Gorge; Halls Gap; Hunter Valley; Mansfield; National Zoo; Paradise Country [Gold Coast]; Shoalhaven; Symbio; Tasmania Zoo; Wildlife HQ; Wild Animal Encounters; Wings Wildlife Park; Zoodoo. Also in research facilities.
Darling Downs Zoo has just announced the arrival of a breeding pair of Maned Wolves from Altina Wildlife Park.*Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) – Adelaide; Altina; Crocodylus; Hunter Valley; National; Shoalhaven; Wildlife HQ
I also recently contacted all three zoos about their snow leopards and only got a response from Melbourne. They currently hold 1.2 snow leopards - their current breeding pair imported in 2017 (Kang-Ju and Miska) and a female kept off-display, who was born at the zoo (Sundah).*Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia) – Billabong; Melbourne; Mogo
I just got an email from Billabong Zoo regarding their snow leopards. As @Riley mentioned they house 2.1 snow leopards - the unrelated pair (Khumbu and Samarra), and a male from the sibling pair (Sabu).Billabong has four animals, all from Taronga: a sibling pair bred in 2005 (at Billabong since 2012) and also Taronga's breeding pair (moved to Billabong in 2015), this pair being a male bred at Mogo in 2003 and a female imported from Mulhouse (France) in 2003.
Veiled Chameleons have an extremely short lifespan...I checked in with a keeper at Melbourne Zoo today and they said that they haven’t kept Golden Lion Tamarins and Emperor Tamarins for many many years.
Also there was a something exciting coming soon in the empty Black Capped Capuchin enclosure and the empty Black and White Ruffed lemur enclosure so I’m not sure what’s happening. There were also these signs in a few other enclosure including the carnivore sections phillipine crocodile enclosure.
Is it normal for Veiled Chameleons to be of exhibit for 4 months?
Tasmania Zoo now have Cheetah (0.2 from Monarto).*Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) – Australia Zoo; Billabong; Darling Downs Zoo; Halls Gap; Hunter Valley; Mogo; Monarto; National Zoo; Sydney Zoo; Symbio; Werribee; Western Plains Zoo; Wild Animal Encounters
Melbourne Zoo’s primate collection continues to shrink. I contacted Zoos Victoria and they no longer have Black and White Ruffed Lemur. They recently lost their last lemur.*Black And White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata) – Australia Zoo; Halls Gap; Hunter Valley; Melbourne; Mogo; National Zoo; Perth; Western Plains Zoo; Wildlife HQ
