Update on the shelduck situation

Birdline Victoria Recent Sightings

Report that it’s a South African Shelduck with confirmation by a credible source
Don't agree with this identification. There are numerous ornithologists who have looked at this bird and some suspect it's a mutant or a hybrid, although it's still disputed at this stage. The main feature that is totally wrong for South African Shelduck is the darkness and the density/type of vermiculation on the flanks and back (which you can even see, though not clearly, in the attached image). I would argue that given the low probability of a SA Shelduck making it to Australia with the Indian Ocean to cross and with none in captivity, you have to be suspicious and skeptical especially when the bird has some notable plumage features that aren't quite right. I'm yet to see a full report where someone experienced with South African Shelduck has made a thorough assessment of the identification, as opposed to an overnight reply.

@MRJ I'm not sure if you were interested in any of my sightings, but the Wood Sandpipers were at a wetland in Clyde, south-eastern Melbourne: -38.121624, 145.342965

Wetlands near Hampton Park, from the car earlier today.
