Elephant update: Kate has now been fully introduced to new bull Emmett.

From the zoo's Facebook: "This is the next step in fully integrating all 6 of our elephants. As always, our keepers are keeping a close eye on the interactions between them and we hope to see the full herd together very soon."

Had a nice visit today and popped in to see the elephants a few times. No sign of Kate, but Emmet and the other girls all looked relaxed together; disappointed not to see them on the grass, but it looked a bit waterlogged.

Your Blackpool elephants photo appears to show all six elephants, so that must include Kate?

I really do not pay attention to anything. One of the females definitely appeared bigger than the rest, even Emmet and amusingly stood her ground when one of the others tried to nudge her away from a feeder, so I suppose that was Kate.

Six elephants does mean you saw all of them including Kate. I'm not sure she is any bigger than the older Twycross females but I think she has a more crooked spine.

Yeah, the spine really stood out on her. It's not unusual for me to miss hear someone, but I thought the lady giving the talk said that Kate was in a separate indoor area. Maybe that was just at night or something.

A few minutes from Blackpool Zoo focusing on the elephants from around 20 minutes in.

The key fact to come from this interview is that Emmett has not actually mated yet(as of the date of the programme) but very possibly the females' cycle needs to be renewed as the two current potential breeders(Tara and Noorjahan) have never been near a bull before. Would that have an effect on them?

I think it may take a few months to get used cows for bull. However, Emmet has only been in Blackpool for 3 months, which is still very low and therefore does not have to be mated. For example, Tembo from Dresden did start mating for the first time after half a year of residence. Another factor is that it is winter and cows can take a break in the cycle.

Yes, I am sure Emmett as a proven bull will mate at some time, just a matter of when...

Do they still hold 0:5 giraffe? Is that the maximum number they can hold even if they were to become a breeding group?

I was due to visit there last autumn but family illness prevented that.

Four females, Olympia, Evie, Tiya and Lily - the house is too small to hold a breeding group.
